Build Muscle | Springing Into Fair Weather Fitness : Build Muscle Tips

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? In the spring an exerciser?s fancy turns to thoughts of outdoor activities.

Before attacking that Saturday softball game or weekend charity run, experts say, prepare your body for the switch.

?We really want them to train for the transition so that they don?t get slammed doing a sport on the weekend they haven?t prepared for,? said Lashaun Dale , group fitness manager at Equinox, the national chain of luxury gyms.

Dale said circuit classes, which exercise one muscle group after another, and interval training classes, which alternate periods of high and low intensity, can fortify the foul weather body for those fair weather team sports.

?They are really great choices for weekend sport activities, because they train the body?s ability to change between energy systems and to make the quick dynamic movements that so many sports require of you,? Dale said.

Part of training for a specific sport, Dale he added, is counter balance and compensation.

?Train the opposite movement pattern,? said Dale. ?Think full range of motion and not just body part. A pitcher?s arm goes back before it propels forward.?

Springing suddenly into an outdoor activity after a sedentary winter is an easy way to get injured, according to Dale.

?You need to give yourself at least one to three weeks of progressive movement before you go all out.?

Josh Lyon, who directs personal training at 24-Hour Fitness, an international chain of health clubs, believes in beginning with the fitness basics: cardio, strength, flexibility and alignment.

?Establish the foundational conditioning first,? said Lyon. ?Then see what?s needed to improve performance.?

Beyond understanding the general physical demands of your chosen sport, he said, consider the position you?re playing.

?In football, a running back is more about speed, agility and quickness, while a lineman is more about power,? he said.

Before starting a new activity, Lyon recommends four-to-six weeks of training under expert guidance.

?Nobody should expect to suddenly come up with a plan on their own,? he said. ?If my car breaks down I don?t try to figure out what the problem is.?

Samantha Clayton, an Olympic sprinter turned trainer and personal fitness coach, said in the spring her clients often turn to the many walk/run competitions that crop up like daisies.

?In order to participate, we change to more sports-specific training,? said Clayton, who is based in Malibu, California. ?It?s almost like starting again. If you want to run better, you need to add more running into your training.?

She said weekend warriors need to take their training in baby steps.

? If now you run three miles a week on treadmill and you want to run a marathon, you need to set really small increments to allow your body to build up to the additional mileage,? she said.

Clayton, whose Olympic career involved the short, timed runs of a sprinter, is changing her own routine ahead of her first triathlon, a three-sport endurance event.

?I?ll need to run a 5K (3.1 mile) distance. So every other day this week I get on the track and run a solid mile,? she said.

Next week she?ll increase the distance.

?People think if they?re generally fit, they can just get on with it,? she said. ?But specific training is important. The only way to become a better runner is to run.?

Images capture split personality of dense suspensions

Monday, April 2, 2012

Stir lots of small particles into water, and the resulting thick mixture appears highly viscous. When this dense suspension slips through a nozzle and forms a droplet, however, its behavior momentarily reveals a decidedly non-viscous side. University of Chicago physicists recorded this surprising behavior in laboratory experiments using high-speed photography that can capture action taking place in one hundred-thousandths of a second or less.

UChicago graduate student Marc Miskin and Heinrich Jaeger, the William J. Friedman and Alicia Townsend Friedman Professor in Physics, expected that the dense suspensions in their experiments would behave strictly like viscous liquids, which tend to flow less freely than non-viscous liquids. Viscosity certainly does matter as the particle-laden liquid begins to exit the nozzle, but not at the moment where the drop's thinning neck breaks in two.

New behavior appears to arise from feedback between the tendencies of the liquid and what the particles within the liquid can allow. "While the liquid deforms and becomes thinner and thinner at a certain spot, the particles also have to move with that liquid. They are trapped inside the liquid," Jaeger explained. As deformation continues, the particles get in each other's way.

"Oil, honey, also would form a long thread, and this thread would become thinner and break in a way characteristic of a viscous liquid," Jaeger said. "The particles in a dense suspension conspire to interact with the liquid in a way that, when it's all said and done, a neck forms that shows signs of a split personality: It thins in a non-viscous fashion, like water, all the while exhibiting a shape more resembling that of its viscous cousins."

It took Miskin and Jaeger six months to become convinced that the viscosity of the suspending liquid was a minor player in their experiments. "It is a somewhat heretical view that this viscosity should not matter," Jaeger said. "Who would have thought that?"

Miskin and Jaeger presented their results in the March 5 online early edition and the March 20 print edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

In their experiments, Miskin and Jaeger compared a variety of pure liquids to mixtures in which particles occupy more than half the volume.

"The results indicate that what we know about drop breakup from pure liquids does not allow us to predict phenomena observed in their experiments," said Jeffrey Morris, professor of chemical engineering at City College of New York. "The most striking and interesting result is the fact that, despite these being very viscous mixtures, the viscosity plays little role in the way a drop forms."

Few studies have examined droplet formation in dense suspensions. As Morris noted, such work could greatly impact applications such as inkjet printing, combustion of slurries involving coal in oil, and the drop-by-drop deposition of cells in DNA microarrays.

Scientific Defiance

In these applications particles often are so densely packed that their behavior defies a simple scientific description, one that might only take into account average particle size and the fraction of the liquid that the particles occupy, Morris explained. The UChicago study showed that particles cause deformations and often protrude through the liquid, rendering any such description incomplete until fundamental questions about the interface between a liquid mixture and its surroundings are properly addressed.

"Miskin and Jaeger provide arguments for the importance of these protrusions in their work and suggest that the issue is of broader relevance to any flow where a particle-laden liquid has an interface with another fluid," Morris said.

Miskin and Jaeger verified their results by systematically evaluating different viscosities, particle sizes and suspending liquids, and developed a mathematical model to explain how the droplet necks evolve over time until they break apart.

One initially counter-intuitive prediction of this model was that larger particles should produce behavior resembling that in pure water without any particles. "If you want to make it behave more like a pure non-viscous liquid, you want to make the particles large," said Jaeger, who finds himself intrigued by nature's seemingly endless store of surprises.

Miskin and Jaeger indeed observed this when the particle size approached a significant fraction of the nozzle diameter, making the particles visible to the naked eye.

"You think you have a pretty good idea of what should happen, and instead there's a surprise at every corner. Honestly, finding surprises is what I love about this work," Jaeger said.

Brotherhood presidency bid turns up heat in Egypt race

CAIRO (Reuters) - A deft businessman and politician tempered by years in Hosni Mubarak's prisons, Khairat al-Shater is aiming to bring Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood to the pinnacle of power for the first time in its 84-year history. But his candidacy for the presidency has exposed rifts in the Islamist group's ranks, worried liberals and could turn up the heat in a row with Egypt's ruling army.

Without even a day of campaigning under his belt but by virtue of the Brotherhood's broad grassroots network, Shater, 61, moves straight into the ranks of frontrunners for the job Mubarak held for 30 years until he was ousted last year.

It marks a dramatic shift for the Brotherhood which has U-turned on its earlier pledge not to field a candidate to avoid charges of monopolizing power in post-Mubarak Egypt. It is also a big change for Shater, a respected strategist for the group who until a little more than a year ago worked in a prison cell.

Yet his candidacy may splinter the Islamist vote, already split between at least three other candidates, and that could hand an advantage to rivals who the army might prefer to see in power, although generals insist they will not get involved.

Shater, a father of 10 whose businesses range from computers to furniture, spent years in and out of jail under Mubarak, who banned the Brotherhood and periodically rounded up its members.

"He is a national hero to Egypt. He created an institution from the sweat of his brow and when it was destroyed because he was in competition with the son of the toppled president, he was jailed and injustice done to him," said Mohamed Badie, the Brotherhood's leader when his candidacy was announced.

But the announcement has generated some swift criticism from both inside and outside the Brotherhood, whose party controls the biggest bloc in parliament and which dominates an assembly that is drawing up the constitution.

"It is the right of the Brotherhood to field its own candidate but they should know they are losing much of their credibility and expanding the divide between them and the rest of Egypt's national groups," wrote Mohamed Habib, a former Brotherhood deputy leader, on his Twitter feed.

Shater kept a low profile immediately after Saturday's decision, issuing a brief statement resigning from his position as a deputy leader. Brotherhood members said plans for his campaign were being drawn up and it could be launched this week.

"NO MONOPOLY"

After years working beyond the public's view, Shater's central role in Brotherhood thinking has become more obvious since his release after Mubarak was toppled in February 2011.

Western and other officials have lined up to meet him. The International Monetary Fund team, seeking a broad consensus for a $3.2 billion loan deal, met him for talks.

One Western diplomat described a calm persona who "exuded control" in one meeting but detected traces of a "bully" in another more heated discussion. "He needs to have grown a thick skin of self-preservation, given his time in jail," he said.

Seen as the group's chief financier and a moderate, one Brotherhood member described Shater as a "excellent strategist" who has kept a tight rein on dissent although that has left some youths disenchanted. But his public message is one of inclusion.

"Egypt will not return to the days of one-party rule. The Brotherhood will help strengthen other parties. Even if one party is a majority, it should never have a monopoly," he told Reuters in an interview in March, 10 days after he was freed.

Yet monopolizing power is how some see the decision to back him for president, a move that could bring the Brotherhood to the pinnacle of power for the first time in its 84-year history.

"It's outrageous. You make a promise, you should keep it," said Yumna Emam, a 28-year-old public affairs coordinator in Cairo. "I only hope people will not fall for it and vote for him after all that."

Ahmed Said, leader of the liberal Free Egyptians, said the group was "proving each day that power is their only goal".

The Brotherhood has been embroiled in an increasingly fierce row with the ruling military council, which had rejected the group's demand that it sack the army-appointed cabinet.

"REAL THREAT"

The Brotherhood says it should form the new cabinet to reflect the parliamentary majority. But the existing constitution gives that power to the military or the newly elected president. The army has refused to back down and defended the performance of its cabinet and the army's handling of the transition.

Explaining the decision to field a candidate, Brotherhood Secretary-General Mahmoud Hussein cited the refusal to sack the cabinet and referred to "a real threat to the revolution and the democratic transition to an elected civilian government".

Though it has swept up seats in parliament, analysts say the Brotherhood remains wary of the military and memories of crackdowns under Mubarak and his predecessors are still fresh.

Shater was last arrested in 2006 and jailed the following year. He was first detained in 1968 under Gamal Abdel Nasser. Egypt's military has dropped two court convictions against him clearing him to run, the Brotherhood's lawyer said on Sunday.

If Shater secures the presidency, the make-up of the cabinet will be in the Brotherhood's hands. But the race will not be plain sailing for Shater, even with the Brotherhood behind him.

The Islamist vote is already split among three main Islamist candidates. And two have built a popular support base.

They are Hazem Salah Abu Ismail, who follows a much more conservative interpretation of Islam than the Brotherhood, and Abdel Moneim Abol Fotoh, kicked out of the Brotherhood for announcing he would run for president before the group changed tack. Shater was among officials who decided to eject him.

The popularity of those candidates may have been one reason for announcing Shater's candidacy: to avoid being outflanked by Islamist rivals. But the move comes with other pitfalls.

With the Islamist vote divided, other candidates could benefit including a former Arab League chief who once served as Mubarak's foreign minister, Amr Moussa, and Ahmed Shafiq, a former military commander like the ex-president who was also Mubarak's last prime minister.

"It could also play in favor of someone who is not belonging to the Islamic trend," political science professor and activist Hassan Nafaa said. "If that is the case ... the Muslim Brotherhood will be considered responsible for this result."

The Brotherhood may yet use its weight to unite Islamist voices behind Shater. Abu Ismail has in the past suggested he might consider standing aside. But Abol Fotoh has insisted he will not halt his campaigning for anyone.
