Unfriending on Social Media Impacts Future Behavior - Psych Central

Unfriending on Social Media Influences Future Behavior Researchers say that unfriending someone on Facebook can have serious real life consequences.

?People think social networks are just for fun,? said study author Christopher Sibona, a doctoral student at the University of Colorado Denver Business School. ?But in fact what you do on those sites can have real world consequences.?

Sibona found that 40 percent of people surveyed said they would avoid in real life anyone who unfriended them on Facebook. However, 50 percent said they would not avoid the person and 10 percent were unsure as to what they would do. Women said they would avoid contact more than men.

The study was based on 582 survey responses gathered via Twitter. Sibona found six factors that predicted whether someone would avoid a person who unfriended them.

  • If the person discussed the event after it happened;
  • If the emotional response to the unfriending was extremely negative;
  • If the person unfriended believed the action was due to offline behavior;
  • The geographical distance between the two;
  • If the troubled relationship was discussed prior to the unfriending;
  • How strong the person valued the relationship before the unfriending.

?The number one predictor was whether the person who said the relationship was over talked about it to someone else,? Sibona said. ?Talking to someone is a public declaration that the friendship is over.?

Those who felt they had behaved badly offline and were being punished for that through unfriending also tended to avoid future contact.

?The gender finding that showed women tended to avoid the person who unfriended them more than men was interesting,? Sibona. ?But we really don?t know why this is.?

The study, published this month by the Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences, highlights how relationships are changing as the world becomes increasingly connected by the Internet.

Americans now spend about 25 percent of their time online using social networks like Facebook which has over a billion members.

Research suggests the traditional face-to-face communication is being replaced by more remote online interactions which have their own rules, language and etiquette ? especially among younger generations.

?The cost of maintaining online relationships is really low, and in the real world, the costs are higher,? Sibona said. ?In the real world, you have to talk to people, go see them to maintain face-to-face relationships. That?s not the case in online relationships. ?

Also, in the real world when a friendship ends it usually just fades away, Sibona said. On Facebook, it can be abruptly terminated with one party declaring the friendship over.

?Since it?s done online there is an air of unreality to it but in fact there are real life consequences,? he said.

?We are still trying to come to grips as a society on how to handle elements of social media. The etiquette is different and often quite stark.?

In 2010, Sibona authored a study on why people are unfriended on Facebook. He found the following top four reasons.

  • Frequent, unimportant posts;
  • Polarizing posts usually about politics or religion;
  • Inappropriate posts involving sexist, racist remarks;
  • Boring everyday life posts about children, food, spouses etc.

Sibona said his current study demonstrates the power of being ostracized on social media.He cited one experiment showing that subjects who experienced such ostracism had lower moods, less feeling of belonging, less sense of control and reduced self-esteem.

?People who are unfriended may face similar psychological effects?because unfriending may be viewed as a form of social exclusion,? Sibona said.

?The study makes clear that unfriending is meaningful and has important psychological consequences for those to whom it occurs.?

San Francisco 49ers' Road To Super Bowl XLVII

Jim Harbaugh's decision to switch quarterbacks during the San Francisco 49ers' season made all the difference to the two players involved, but you'd hardly tell that such a monumental shift occurred merely by looking at the team's win-loss record.

With Alex Smith under center, the 49ers opened up with a 6-2 record. In their first game back from a Week 9 bye, Smith suffered a concussion against the Rams and second-year, second-stringer Colin Kaepernick took over. That game resulted in a rare tie but San Francisco soon got back to its winning ways. Following two straight Kaepernick-powered wins, Harbaugh chose to go with the "hot hand" even though Smith was available. A week later, coming off a loss to the Rams, Harbaugh decided to stick with Kaepernick and never looked back.

The result? Kaepernick went 5-2 as the starting quarterback to finish the regular season, then delivered two stunning performances in the playoffs leading the 49ers to Super Bowl XLVII.

Panasonic, Sharp expect red ink despite yen help

Japanese electronics maker Sharp Corp. has reduced its quarterly losses but its outlook remains challenging. The Osaka-based company left its forecast for the full year ending March unchanged Friday, Feb. 1, at a 450 billion yen loss ($5 billion) as its flat-panel business for TVs and mobile devices gets hammered by plunging prices and intense competition. Sharp reported a 36.7 billion yen ($399 million) net loss for the October-December period, a smaller flow of red ink than its 173.6 billion yen loss a year earlier. In this Thursday, Jan. 31, 2013 photo, a shopper speaks with a salesclerk in front of Panasonic flat-panel TVs at an electronics store in Tokyo. Japanese electronics maker Panasonic Corp. returned to the black last quarter as cost cuts and a weaker yen offset sliding sales. (AP) ? Japanese electronics makers Panasonic Corp. and Sharp Corp. both stuck to full year forecasts for massive losses even as results for the latest quarter got a boost from the weaker yen.

The two Osaka-based companies are among the Japanese electronics makers battered by price plunges in gadgets and hot competition from more successful rivals such as Apple Inc. and South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co.

Panasonic reported a 61.4 billion yen ($667 million) profit for the October-December period Friday. It had a loss of 698 billion yen in the previous quarter and a loss of 197.6 billion yen a year earlier. Quarterly sales slipped 8 percent to 1.8 trillion yen ($19.6 billion).

The company, which makes Viera TVs and Lumix digital cameras, said global demand weakened for flat panel TVs and digital products and devices while sales grew in LED lighting and auto-related equipment.

Sharp, which makes Aquos TVs and solar panels, reported a smaller flow of red ink for October through December. Its quarterly net loss shrank to 36.7 billion yen ($399 million) from 173.6 billion yen a year earlier.

It posted an operating profit for the period, the first time in five quarters, thanks to a recovery in liquid-crystal panel TVs and devices for smartphones. The operating result excludes one-time gains and losses to provide a clearer picture of financial performance.

Key to its improving fortunes was a return to the black in flat-panel TV operations, which had lost money for a year until the latest quarter. Sharp is promising to return to profit for the fiscal year through March 2014.

Sharp's quarterly sales rose 15 percent to 678.2 billion yen ($7.4 billion).

But both companies left unchanged their dismal forecasts for massive losses for the fiscal year through March.

Panasonic is projecting a 765 billion yen ($9.6 billion) annual loss. Sharp expects a 450 billion yen ($5 billion) loss, record red ink for the manufacturer founded in 1912, making products such as the twist-type mechanical pencil.

Panasonic, a brand that was an archrival to Sony Corp. during the decades of Japan's post World War II economic modernization, has been shifting its business from consumer electronics to focus more on operations that cater to other businesses such as batteries and solar panels.

But it remains strong in appliances such as washing machines and refrigerators in some regions.

As exporters, Panasonic and Sharp got a boost from a favorable exchange rate. The dollar has strengthened about 14 percent against the yen in the past three months on expectations a new government would relax monetary policy to boost the nation's moribund economy.

Panasonic gained 3 billion yen ($33 million) in the latest quarter in operating profit from the weaker yen, according to the company. Sharp did not have a quarterly breakdown, but gained 700 million yen ($7.6 million) from the fall in the yen's exchange rate with the dollar and 500 million yen ($5.4 million) versus the euro over the first nine months of the fiscal year.

Panasonic reported a record loss of 772.2 billion yen ($8.4 billion) for the fiscal year through March 2012 ? among the biggest in Japan's manufacturing history.

Sony, which also sank into a record loss for that fiscal year, reports earnings next week.

China factories see only modest pick-up, Europe stabilizes

LONDON/BEIJING (Reuters) - China's vast factory sector managed only a shallow rebound at the start of 2013 and manufacturing in the euro zone remained weak, although there the worst may be over, a clutch of surveys suggested on Friday.

Markit's purchasing managers' indexes, which cover thousands of factories, pointed to a still slow global economy and data due later on Friday from the United States was expected to show a slight easing of growth in the world's biggest economy.

"The general sense, if you look at what it is in the pipeline, is that we will be getting a little bit more activity in the months to come," said Peter Dixon, economist at Commerzbank.

"The Chinese economy does appear to be gaining a bit of traction but not a huge amount (and) the euro zone numbers tell us the economy remains stuck in low gear."

The uneven nature of the recovery on factory floors was repeated in PMI releases across Asia and Europe. Surveys showed growth slowed in India and stalled in South Korea while Britain's expanded modestly.

The crisis-hit euro zone appears to be stabilizing, however. Factories in the common currency area had their best month in nearly a year as an improving outlook in Germany offered support amid signs the worst may be over for the troubled bloc.

Two separate versions of China's PMI pointed to rising factory output in the world's second-biggest economy, but the pace of the revival in activity in January was uneven.

"Chinese manufacturers received support from robust domestic demand, but were struck by the lackluster demand from its two main export destinations, Europe and the U.S.," said Nikolaus Keis, an economist at UniCredit.

The U.S. economy unexpectedly contracted in the fourth quarter, according to the advance estimate, although many analysts said there was no reason for panic given that consumer spending and business investment picked up.

The euro zone economy also probably contracted, by 0.4 percent at the end of last year, chalking up its third negative quarter, and will only stagnate in the current period, according to a Reuters poll published last month.

In January the euro zone PMI rose to an 11-month high of 47.9 from December's 46.1, pointing to a continued decline in activity but suggesting the downturn in manufacturing output - which fell for most of last year - has passed its nadir.

The output index, which feeds into a broader gauge of the economy, the composite PMI, due next Tuesday, rose to a 10-month high of 48.7 from December's 46.0. That was the biggest one-month jump in a year.

Financial markets reacted positively to the data with stocks extending gains and the euro rising broadly.

"While still in contraction territory, the manufacturing PMIs signal that upward momentum is spreading and the pace of contraction in euro zone output is slowing," said Evelyn Herrmann, European economist at BNP Paribas.

"This said, the story in the euro zone remains one of national divergence between the peripheries and the core, but as the divergence in recent survey indicators between France and Germany shows, now also spreads across core countries."

Markit said the gap between the German and French PMIs was the widest ever, leaving Germany, Europe's largest economy, as the region's shining light.

Germany's PMI staged its biggest one-month jump since the middle of 2009, to 49.8, showing stabilizing activity, while output expanded in January.

But in France, Europe's second-largest economy, the downturn deepened. Its PMI sank to a four-month low of 42.9.

PMIs for laggards Italy and Spain beat expectations as new export orders rose.

And British manufacturing expanded modestly in January as output grew at the fastest pace since September 2011, offering a small boost to an economy flirting with recession.

China's official PMI released by the government's statistics bureau eased to 50.4 from 50.6 in December, and below the Reuters consensus for a rise to 50.9. A similar PMI released by HSBC rose to a two-year high of 52.3.

The twin Chinese PMIs showed export orders either grew marginally or shrank as shoppers in the United States and Europe, the two biggest buyers of Chinese goods, cut back spending.

Domestic demand, on the other hand, was the main force behind China's gentle economic rebound, driving growth in new orders in January to multi-month highs.

Factories in Indonesia, the star emerging economy of the past year, said business shrank in January from December for the first time in eight months, while manufacturers in Taiwan reported the fastest growth in 10 months.
