2013 Oklahoma Baseball Preview: The Outfield

The Sooners will return a ton of experience to the baseball diamond this spring...just not in the outfield. That's not to say that there isn't talent there in the outfield or that that it is a potential weakness. It is to say, however, that there is a bit of a mystery with Oklahoma's outfielders.

The Cardiovascular Research Foundation will host a scientific meeting on the latest breakthroughs and techniques for chronic total occlusions and percutaneous left main interventions

WHAT:

The final agenda for the Chronic Total Occlusion and Left Main Summit has been set and is now available at: http://www.complexpci.com/conference/agenda.html.

The three-day conference will feature state-of-the-art technologies, research findings and new developments in therapeutic procedures essential for interventional cardiologists to optimize success in chronic total coronary occlusions and left main coronary interventions. Topics at this year's summit will include:

  • Fundamentals of CTO PCI
  • Complex Retrograde and Antegrade CTO PCI
  • Updates on Global CTO Registries
  • Left Main PCI: Essential Knowledge
  • Left Main Publications and Abstracts
  • Complication Prevention and Management
  • How to Improve Outcomes
  • Live Case Transmissions
  • Edited Taped Case Presentations

WHY:

A complete blockage in the coronary artery lasting more than three months, or chronic total occlusion (CTO), has historically been one of the most challenging types of blockages to treat with an interventional procedure. Leading practitioners of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) must become experts at restoring blood flow for patients with chronic total occlusions, and with advanced techniques, success rates greater than 90% may be obtained.

Stenting of the unprotected left main coronary artery has also emerged as a viable alternative to surgery in selected patients but requires a special skill set and understanding of anatomy, imaging, hemodynamic support, and adjunctive devices.

This year's conference will emphasize both advanced techniques and evidence-based medicine, along with live case transmissions featuring the world's leading experts in left main and CTO stenting.

WHEN:

February 21-23, 2013

Obama pledges swift reaction to NKorea nuke test

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama reacted sharply to North Korea's nuclear test Tuesday, promising swift international action to bring the rogue communist regime in line. The detonation came hours before the president's State of the Union address, where he was expected to touch on U.S. plans to reduce its nuclear arsenal.

In a statement, Obama called Pyongyang's third nuclear test in seven years a "highly provocative act" that threatens U.S. security and international peace. The reaction from the White House was significantly stronger than it was after North Korea's long-range missile test in December, when the administration only promised "appropriate action" alongside America's allies.

"The danger posed by North Korea's threatening activities warrants further swift and credible action by the international community," Obama said in a statement early Tuesday. "The United States will also continue to take steps necessary to defend ourselves and our allies."

Secretary of State John Kerry spoke by telephone with the foreign ministers of South Korea and Japan after the test, as well as China, and Obama called South Korean President Lee Myung-bak to assure him the U.S. would help defend his country.

North Korea said it successfully detonated a miniaturized nuclear device at a northeastern test site Tuesday. South Korean, U.S. and Japanese seismic monitoring agencies said they detected an earthquake in North Korea with a magnitude between 4.9 and 5.2.

North Korea's official Korean Central News Agency said the test was conducted safely but with "great explosive power." The test counters the "ferocious" U.S. hostility that undermines the North's peaceful, sovereign right to launch satellites, it argued. Last month, North Korea's National Defense Commission said the United States was its prime target for a nuclear test and long-range rocket launches.

"These provocations do not make North Korea more secure," Obama said. "Far from achieving its stated goal of becoming a strong and prosperous nation, North Korea has instead increasingly isolated and impoverished its people through its ill-advised pursuit of weapons of mass destruction and their means of delivery."

The Obama administration's options for a response are limited ? even though it is committed to protecting America's key Asian allies, South Korea and Japan.

The U.S. already maintains severe unilateral sanctions against North Korea, and commerce between the two countries is nearly nonexistent. Tougher global sanctions are dependent on the participation of China, Pyongyang's primary trading partner, but Beijing has resisted measures that would cut off North Korea's economy completely.

At the U.N., the Security Council opened an emergency meeting Tuesday and condemned North Korea's action. But any new, binding international sanctions will now have to be worked out.

More forceful U.S. consequences, in the form of a military response, are highly unlikely even though the United States remains technically at war with the notoriously unpredictable North Koreans, whose opaque leadership has confounded successive American administrations. Only the 1953 armistice ending the Korean War keeps the U.S. and the North from hostilities, and some 28,500 U.S. troops in South Korea to deter potential aggression.

But with the South Korean capital of Seoul just 40 miles south of the nuclear-armed North's border and its million-man army, the risks involved in any military action are great. And just raising the rhetoric can even serve as a reward to North Korea's attention-seeking government, which starves its citizens while seeking to leverage any military advance it makes into much-needed aid.

The test occurred hours before Obama was to deliver his prime-time address to the nation. While the bulk of the speech will focus on the economy and job creation, the administration had sought to emphasize that it wants to work with Russia on further reducing the amount of deployable nuclear weapons each power maintains, building on the U.S.-Russian New START accord that took effect in 2011.

It's unclear how North Korea's test would affect the planning. Tommy Vietor, a spokesman for the White House's National Security Council, said Obama would make the case Tuesday evening that the "only way North Korea will rejoin the world community is if they stop these threats and live up to their international obligations."

State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland added that North Korea's test was unrelated to the president's position that the U.S. has "more nuclear weapons than we need."

"We're obviously talking about apples and oranges in the context of the U.S. having almost 1,700 nuclear weapons and we are working to prevent (North Korea) from having the effective ability to launch a far smaller amount," she said.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, in remarks Tuesday morning to Pentagon workers gathered in the building's courtyard, said the U.S. is going to have to continue to deal with rogue states like North Korea.

"We just saw what North Korea has done in these last few weeks, a missile test and now a nuclear test," he said. "They represent a serious threat to the United States of America, and we've got to be prepared to deal with that. "

The chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, California Republican Ed Royce, called for even tougher sanctions and demanded that the administration "replace its failed North Korea policy."

"Otherwise, the grave North Korean threat to the region and the United States will only grow," Royce said.

And House Intelligence Committee chairman Mike Rogers, R-Mich., added that the U.S. must take a new approach to dealing with North Korea. "The key to stemming North Korea's cycle of provocation is to seriously engage the Chinese in exercising leverage over their neighbor," he said.

On Tuesday, China expressed firm opposition to the test but called for a calm response by all sides.

wise self improvement | self improvement made easy: Overcoming ...

Anger is a form of negative energy, which can take over our mind and control of our life. It is natural to lose control in some situations, but if you have no control over your mind and anger is in control, then you are prone to act out aggressively whenever you are rejected, frightened, or emotionally disturbed. People who cannot control their anger should address the problem and seek anger management help from anger management therapists.

Seeking help for anger and stress management is a courageous act and you should know that the doctor's are there to help. If they decide that you need anger management medication, then you should agree to take them. In most cases, anger management medications are not required.

There are various educational materials available on the internet and numerous anger management books that you should read in order to regain self-control. Self-control lets you prevent your emotions from overflowing, meaning that when you are angry you should see what the problem is and then what you can do to resolve the problem, without any violence, either verbal or physical, taking place. This is a powerful anger management technique.

We all know that we are living in an anger driven society. The anger is not just on the population level, but it is also spread on the governmental level as well. There are many underlying problems that lead to an outburst of anger that should be addressed to prevent us from following the crowd:

1. If we have had any failures in our life, the most common reaction is to want to throw things, not respond to anyone's questions and, if we give any responses to anyone then they are in a harsh manner. This can make the other person mad as well and no problem is getting solved, but is getting more and more complex.

2. There are quite a high percentage of people who have problems with substance abuse. Substance abuse is nothing but a step on the road to destruction and most of the time substance abuse is the major underlying cause of anger disorders.

3. In some cases child abuse is also the underlying cause of anger and personality disorders.

Statistics relating to the study of anger show that someone with anger disorders has the ability to kill, harm, injure, or sabotage anybody's life. It is quite evident that when a person is angry they are in a threatening state of mind, because of an underlying reason that makes it difficult for them to cope with the problem they are facing. They cannot control themselves and it is essential that they find anger management help.

But, we should all ask why do we hurt others because of our anger? Sometimes we become selfish and just think about our selves and forget about other people that we are affecting in many ways and are passing on a series of bad feelings. We should consider that problems are like pebbles or stones in our way and we can stumble, but we should re-gain our balance and go on with our journey. That is a valuable piece of anger management advice.

Problems are faced by everyone on a daily basis. If you are at home and are stressed you are likely to be very irritable and if someone asks, "Have you brought groceries with you?" This trigger may be enough for you to go mad and scream at the person to, "go and bring them yourself and do not bug me!"

After this little heated exchange, the fight can gain momentum, but if you will re-gain self-control using anger management techniques, then you will not answer any more and should be thinking reasonably that this is a little problem, which should not be turned into a big one. Fighting fire with fire is not a solution in any scenario and you should know that you should avoid fights where there is no real reason to fight. Anger management strategies that promote mental harmony and politeness can make your life, and everybody else's life related to you more blissful.

Paterno family challenges Freeh report

Gene J. Puskar / AP file

Joe Paterno and his wife Susan stand on their porch to thank well-wishers gathered outside in State College, Pa., Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2011.

By Tom Winter, NBC News

A newly released report commissioned by the family of late Penn State football coach Joe Paterno strongly challenges the conclusions by an earlier inquiry conducted for the university.

The embattled college last year tasked former FBI director Louis Freeh to investigate the atmosphere surrounding the scandal involving retired defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky and the child sex abuse charges against him.

Freeh?s report found that Penn State officials and Paterno himself conspired for years to hide the allegations against Sandusky. The report effectively ruined the reputation of the once-revered coach and lead to the NCAA stripping him of all of his school?s victories from 1998 to 2011.

The new family-commissioned study released Sunday was done by a team reviewing Freeh?s work that included former U.S. Attorney General and Pennsylvania Governor Dick Thornburgh.?

It called the Freeh report ?flawed in its investigative processes and methodology, in its access to information, and in its reasoning based on the record, and that ultimately it draws unreliable, unfair and incorrect conclusions as to Joe Paterno.?

Freeh's report reached "inaccurate and unfounded findings related to Mr. Paterno and its numerous process-oriented deficiencies was a rush to injustice and calls into question" the investigation's credibility, Thornburgh was quoted as saying.

Freeh was brought in to conduct an independent investigation of the school's response to allegations and find any shortcomings in governance and compliance to make sure failures don't happen again, Penn State said in a statement Sunday He made 119 recommendations to strengthen policies, and the majority have been implemented, according to the school.

"It is understandable and appreciated that people will draw their own conclusions and opinions from the facts uncovered in the Freeh report," the school said.

More from NBC Sports

And in a statement released Sunday through a spokesman, Freeh also defended his work.

"I stand by our conclusion that four of the most powerful people at Penn State failed to protect against a child sexual predator harming children for over a decade," he said.

Meanwhile, sources familiar with the investigation and school record keeping procedures told NBC News that they questioned some of the assertions in the new Paterno report.

For instance, the family?s report argues that: ?The conspiracy claim made by the Freeh report based on a string of three emails falls apart under scrutiny. [But] because of a technology switch in 2004, most of the Penn State emails for the time in question are not accessible. Moreover, there are no emails authored by Joe Paterno and none that he received.?

But the sources familiar with the investigation and school record keeping?procedures told NBC News that, while the Penn State Athletic Department may have changed its e-mail system in 2004, key e-mails from school officials including those between President Graham Spanier and school administrator Gary Schultz were actually archived.

These e-mail exchanges were cited by Freeh and prosecutors in their reports and in court documents.

And as for the claim that Joe Paterno never authored an e-mail, that is likely technically true, as it is well known that Paterno's assistant typed and printed his e-mails.

According to the Thornburgh analysis for the Paterno family, Freeh's report relied on about 30 documents, including three notes authored by Paterno, and 17 emails. Four emails referenced Paterno ? but none were actually sent by the coach who famously shied away from modern technology.

Sandusky, 69, was sentenced to at least 30 years in prison in October 2012, after being convicted last summer of 45 criminal counts. Prosecutors said assaults occurred off and on campus, including the football building.

His arrest in November 2011 triggered the turmoil that led to Paterno's firing days later. Under pressure, Spanier left as president the same day.
