Matthew 'Zeke' Bent Guilty Of Battery In Flame Attack On Michael Brewer

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- A teenager accused of orchestrating an attack that left his classmate in flames was convicted Tuesday of aggravated battery after jurors decided against more serious charges.

Matthew "Zeke" Bent faced a charge of attempted second-degree murder after prosecutors say he offered friends money in 2009 to harm Michael Brewer, who was doused in rubbing alcohol and set on fire. The six jurors, who deliberated for just over a day, had the option of finding him guilty of a lesser offense.

Brewer suffered severe burns over 65 percent of his body but survived after leaping into an apartment complex swimming pool.

The Brewer family had been in court for much of the trial, but weren't present Tuesday.

"The Brewers respect the jury's decision. Now it's time for Michael to get on with his life. ...And today he has closure," said their attorney, Jeanne Brady.

Prosecutors echoed Brady.

"Michael Brewer spent the last three years healing from his physical wounds. And now he's moving on with his emotional wounds," said Kal Le Var Evans, an assistant state attorney.

A defense attorney said the three years that Bent has been in jail awaiting trial was already a hefty penalty.

"He thought that three years for his involvement was quite substantial," said defense attorney Perry Thurston, Jr. "He's disappointed."

Bent and two other teens were charged with second-degree attempted murder, which carries a prison sentence of as many as 30 years. Denver "D.C." Jarvis, 17, and 18-year-old Jesus Mendez pleaded no contest earlier and were sentenced to eight and 11 years behind bars, respectively.

Bent faces a maximum term of 15 years at his sentencing hearing on July 23. His lawyers said they plan to file an appeal.

Bent initially intended to plead no contest as well, but backed out at the last minute and opted for trial. His attorneys insisted he was not the instigator of the attack and never intended to hurt Brewer.

Prosecutors had urged jurors not to let Bent sidestep guilt because he had others carry out the attack.

"Don't let him get away with letting other people do his dirty work for him," Assistant State Attorney Maria Schneider said of the defendant during closing arguments Monday. "Matthew Bent was the reason why this crime happened. He was offering people money to beat Michael, not to scare Michael."

Defense attorney Johnny McCray said the state was overreaching with its prosecution of Bent.

"An innocent child doesn't have to be convicted to bring justice to Michael Brewer," McCray told the jury that began deliberations Monday afternoon.

The defense did not call a single witness, and Bent did not testify.

Brewer testified that he stayed home from school the day of the attack because he was afraid of Bent. The two had gotten into a dispute over a marijuana pipe that Bent was trying to force Brewer to buy, Brewer testified. Bent then allegedly tried to steal a bicycle belonging to Brewer's father, which led to Bent's arrest.

"I was afraid," Brewer testified. "I thought something was going to happen to me."

After school the day of the attack, Brewer decided to visit a friend at a nearby apartment complex. On the way he encountered a group of boys including Bent, Jarvis and Mendez.

The boys had found a jug of rubbing alcohol by chance on a low wall alongside the complex, and Jarvis testified that Bent offered him $5 or $10 to pour it on Brewer. Other boys said Bent offered the group $5 each to punch Brewer.

Jarvis did douse Brewer and Mendez then flicked a lighter he was holding, sparking the blaze. In a statement to police, Mendez said he never expected the liquid to ignite so explosively.

Brewer spent months in the hospital, undergoing seven skin graft operations, followed by months more of rehabilitation and physical therapy. He testified that he still feels pain in his back and legs but said he remembers little after diving into the pool.

"I started getting really cold, and then I started seeing blur," Brewer said.

The Rise of the Fork

In the time of Henry III, fork-owners would have been well-off, and most of them would have had one set of cutlery that traveled with them; there are numerous examples of forks and knives housed in carrying cases that could be slung over a shoulder or around a waist. It wasn't until the late 1600s and early 1700s that people began to purchase multiple sets of silverware for their homes, which were just beginning to be equipped with rooms specifically set aside for dining. It was also around this time that forks with three and then four tines were made. Even as the fork gained ground, it was not universally accepted. As Ferdinand Braudel notes in The Structure of Everyday Life, around the beginning of the 18th century, Louis XIV forbade his children to eat with the forks that their tutor had encouraged them to use. But by the middle of the century, the use of the fork had become sufficiently normal that rebukes were reserved for those who used forks incorrectly. In 1760, Fran?ois Baron de Tott, a French aristocrat and military officer, gave this account of an overly mannered dinner party in Turkey: "A circular table, with chairs all around it, spoons, forks?nothing was missing except the habit of using them. But they did not wish to omit any of our manners which were just becoming as fashionable among the Greeks as English manners are among ourselves, and I saw one woman throughout the dinner taking olives with her fingers and then impaling them on her fork in order to eat in them in the French manner."

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Federal Reserve is trying again to jolt the American economy out of its stalled recovery. It's extending a program that aims to encourage borrowing and spending by reducing long-term interest rates.

Wednesday's decision followed months of concern that the economy is being held back by a weakened job market.

At the end of a two-day policy meeting, the Fed also sharply reduced its forecast for U.S. growth and said it's prepared to take more action if necessary. It reiterated plans to keep short-term interest rates at record lows until at least late 2014.

"If we're not seeing a sustained improvement in the labor market, that would require additional action," Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke said later in the day.

Wall Street wasn't impressed by the Fed's limited response. Stock prices barely budged. And analysts questioned how much benefit the Fed's latest economy-boosting effort would have, in part because interest rates are already near record lows.

If the Fed's more pessimistic outlook proves accurate, President Barack Obama's chances in an election that will turn on the economy would also likely suffer.

Bernanke noted that the economy is under threat from Europe's debt crisis and the prospect of sharp spending cuts and tax increases that would take effect at the end of the year unless Congress acts.

European leaders will be seeking a breakthrough at a summit next week in Brussels. Bernanke said he's in regular touch with the head of the European Central Bank.

The Fed said it will continue a program called Operation Twist through year's end. Under the program, the Fed has been selling $400 billion in short-term Treasurys since September and buying longer-term Treasurys. Operation Twist was to expire at the end of June. The Fed said it will extend it using $267 billion in securities.

But extending Operation Twist might not provide much benefit. Businesses and consumers who aren't borrowing now aren't that likely to change their minds just because rates dropped a little more.

"This move is largely symbolic," said David Jones, chief economist at DMJ Advisors.

Jones estimates Operation Twist will lower long-term rates by only about one-tenth of a percentage point.

At his quarterly news conference later Wednesday, Bernanke said the Fed would consider more aggressive action, such as another bond-buying program. The Fed has completed two such programs. It bought more than $2 trillion in Treasurys and mortgage-backed securities, expanding its portfolio above $2.8 trillion.

The yields on Treasury bonds finished the day slightly below where they were before the announcement. The Dow Jones industrial average finished down about 13 points.

John Canally, investment strategist at LPL Financial, says the Fed delivered just what investors expected and offered a hint at further easing.

"If there's another misstep somewhere ? in Europe ... more weak data ? the Fed's going to do more," Canally said.

For now, he said, the Fed wants to keep "some powder dry" in case there's a meltdown in Europe. Canally also suggested that the Fed may be reluctant to be aggressive in an election year out of concern it could be seen as affecting the election.

But in a comment on Twitter, Justin Wolfers, an economics professor at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton Business School, suggested that the Fed might be on the cusp of going further.

Wolfers characterized their view as: "One more bad jobs report and we'll do more."

The Fed now thinks the economy will grow no more than 2.4 percent this year. That compares with its forecast in April that the economy could grow up to 2.9 percent. And the central bank now thinks the unemployment rate, currently at 8.2 percent, won't fall much further in 2012.

In its statement, the Fed noted that oil and gas prices have fallen. Lower prices give the Fed room to take further action without igniting inflation.

The Fed's statement was approved on an 11-1 vote. Jeffery Lacker, president of the Richmond Regional Fed Bank, dissented for the fourth straight meeting. The statement said he opposed the continuation of Operation Twist.

Josh Feinman, global chief economist at DB Advisors, said the extension of Operation Twist allows the Fed to do something without expanding its portfolio of securities. Launching a new bond-buying program would have likely incited criticism that the Fed was escalating the long-term risks to the economy.

In part, that's because the Fed would eventually find it harder to shrink its portfolio without driving interest rates back up and possibly threatening the economy.

"The downside risks have increased enough that they felt they needed to do something," Feinman said. "Extending Operation Twist was the path of least resistance."

The U.S. economy looks weaker than it did when the Fed last met in April. Growth was more sluggish in the first three months of the year than first estimated.

Job growth averaged only 73,000 in April and May, after average gains of 226,000 a month in the first three months of the year.

The number of people seeking unemployment benefits has risen about 5 percent in the past six weeks. And employers posted sharply fewer job openings in April compared with the previous month.

Economists also worry the debt crisis in Europe is worsening, even after Greek election results increased the likelihood that Greece will stay in the euro currency alliance.

One positive trend is that U.S. inflation is low. Core consumer prices, which exclude volatile food and energy costs, have risen just 2.3 percent over the past 12 months. That's near the Fed's 2 percent target for inflation.

Critics have complained about the Fed's efforts to boost growth over the past three years by purchasing more than $2 trillion in bonds. They say the extra money added to the banking system could ignite inflation once the economy rebounds.

This week's Fed meeting was the first time that the Fed board has been at full strength in six years. Jeremy Stein, a Harvard economics professor, and Jerome Powell, a former private equity executive, attended their first policy meeting since being confirmed by the Senate last month.

PFT: Ochocinco wants to play for Dolphins

Indianapolis Colts v Jacksonville JaguarsGetty Images

Boycotting mandatory offseason workouts isn?t as cheap as it used to be.

Under the new labor deal, which was finalized after any mandatory minicamps would have been conducted in 2011, the maximum fines for skipping the three-day non-voluntary practice sessions have increased.? Signficantly.

Under Article 42, Section 1(ix) of the CBA, a player who skips one day of a mandatory minicamp may be fined up to $10,000.? If he skips a second day, another $20,000 fine may be imposed.? By completing the trifecta, a maximum additional fine of $30,000 may be assessed, bringing the total possible fine to $60,000.

In contrast, former Broncos receiver Brandon Marshall faced a total fine of less then $10,000 for skipping all three days of a mandatory minicamp under the last CBA.

On top of that, a player could be subject to a partial forfeiture of certain bonuses, a waiver of any remaining guarantees in his contract, and other enhanced penalties authorized by the new CBA.

That?s ultimately why guys like Cowboys cornerback Mike Jenkins, Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew, and other unhappy minicampers who are under contract will attend their respective teams? mandatory offseason practices, many of which will happen this week.

So Jenkins showing up doesn?t mean he doesn?t want to be traded, and Jones-Drew showing up doesn?t mean he doesn?t want a new contract.? It only means that they both have 60,000 reasons to be there ? along with any other money they could lose by breaching their current contracts.

Sly Google wields the knife in Chinese Internet censorship tussle

Google has introduced a new feature for Chinese users that will pull back the curtain on Chinese Internet government censorship.

By Peter Ford,?Staff writer / June 1, 2012

This week the search engine giant Google kept a polite smile on its face as it stuck its shiv in up to the hilt, introducing a feature to its Chinese site that tells users exactly when the censors have blocked a search word for being too ?sensitive.?

The Chinese government keeps its list of banned search terms secret; Google is now revealing them. But not once did Google Vice President Alan Eustace mention the word ?censorship? in his blog introducing the new feature.

Instead he noted that users in China ?are regularly getting error messages? when they search for ?a particular subset of queries.? He mentioned the word ?jiang? as a case in point ? but did not explain why such a common surname that also means ?river? should be a banned search term.

It?s because ?jiang? is the surname of former president Jiang Zemin, about whom the censors don?t want Chinese citizens to find out much because most of what is written about him on the web concerns his allegedly poor health and his role in succession struggles within the ruling Communist party.

The problem for Google users in China, and Google, is that whenever a user searched for a banned word not only would the search yield only an error message, but the connection to Google would be lost for a minute or so, which is highly inconvenient.

No wonder that Google has only 16 percent of the Chinese search engine market, way behind local competitor Baidu, with 78 percent. Baidu self-censors, so its users have no problem searching ?jiang.? Google has refused to self censor since 2010, when it withdrew from the mainland and based itself in Hong Kong.

Google?s new feature, designed, says Mr. Eustace, to ?help improve the search experience in mainland China,? will warn users when they are searching for a banned word that will cut their connection, allowing them to re-define their searchwords.

Google has identified the ?dangerous? words after analyzing the censors? response to 350,000 of the most popular search queries in China, Eustace explained. And now it is telling its users what those words are, in defiance of the Chinese government?s policy of keeping them secret.

But not too defiant. The tone of Eustace?s blog could not have been smoother nor its references to censorship more roundabout. Google, it seems, does not want to upset Beijing too much.

Perhaps that is because although the US company is pretty much out of the search engine market here, and the censors block or mess with all its products except Gmail, Google still has a big commercial interest in China.

The firm is pushing its Android mobile phone operating system hard, and successfully, with Chinese handset manufacturers. Last month it won Beijing?s approval for its $12.5 billion purchase of Motorola Mobility, a wireless device maker. Under those circumstances, it is probably best not to be too blunt when you are challenging the authorities. A polite smile to mask the knife thrust seems a wise idea.
