Malaysia bans Erykah Badu show over Allah body art (omg!)

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) ? Muslim-majority Malaysia on Tuesday banned a planned concert by Erykah Badu after a photograph appeared showing the Grammy-winning singer with the Arabic word for Allah written on her body.

The American R&B singer was scheduled to perform Wednesday in Kuala Lumpur, but some Muslim groups said Badu was an unsuitable role model for young Malaysians after seeing a publicity photo of her with what appeared to be temporary tattoos of the word Allah on her bare shoulders.

A government committee that includes police and Islamic policy officials decided to forbid Badu's show because the body art was "an insult to Islam and a very serious offense," Information Minister Rais Yatim said in a statement.

The photo of Badu had "triggered public criticism that could jeopardize national security and cause a negative impact to the government's image," the statement added.

The 41-year-old, Dallas-born singer had already arrived in Malaysia. She can stay as a tourist but will not be allowed to perform, an Information Ministry official said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to make public statements.

Razman Razali, managing director of the show's Malaysian organizer, Pineapple Concerts, said his company hopes the ban will be reversed.

Badu is "worried and dismayed," Razman told The Associated Press. She was slated to perform in an auditorium that can hold about 3,000 spectators.

It was the first concert by a Western performer to be banned in Malaysia in recent years. Several other stars, including Gwen Stefani and Avril Lavigne, were told to dress modestly while performing.

The photograph of Badu, which also appears on her official fan website, attracted attention after Malaysia's most widely read English-language daily, The Star, published it Monday.

On Tuesday, the newspaper apologized to Muslims for what it called an "oversight," saying it deeply regretted any offense sparked by the photo, which was "inadvertently published." The Home Ministry summoned The Star's editors to explain the photograph, which caused some Muslim activists to demand the newspaper's suspension.

Qnexa a Potentially New Obesity Drug? | Bodybuilding ...

Proponents of a new obesity medication from Vivus Inc told U.S. reviewers on Wednesday that the drug?s health benefits exceed heart and birth defect risks.

A panel of outside experts to the Food and Drug Administration will vote later on Wednesday on whether to recommend approval for what would be the first new prescribed drug for obesity in 13 years.

The FDA first rejected Vivus? Qnexa in 2010 because of safety problems, along with two other obesity pills that are also seeking a second round of consideration.

The FDA usually follows panel recommendations, although it is not required to. It will make a final decision by April 17.

Qnexa, which combines the appetite suppressant phentermine and anti-seizure drug topiramate, helped patients lose at least 10 percent of their weight after a year of treatment, the company said .

Obesity, a leading cause of diabetes, heart disease and other serious health problems, has reached epidemic proportions in the United States, with about a third of the population obese and more than half overweight.

?Back in medical school, I was taught that when the risk of not treating the condition exceeds the risk of treating it, we should treat,? said Dr. Arya Sharma, a chair in obesity research at the University of Alberta in Canada and paid consultant to Vivus.

?We have an obligation to change how we measure obesity. Qnexa addresses an urgent and substantial unmet medical need for our patients,? he told panelists.

The FDA has set a high approval bar for weight loss drugs because such a large portion of the general population is likely to want to take them, and has not approved a new obesity drug since 1999.

Also, many diet pills have been linked to serious heart-related risks.

But patient groups say the FDA is holding obesity drugs to a higher standard than other treatments because of views that it is a choice, not a disease. They are urging the FDA to approve new obesity drugs that would give patients another option between lifestyle changes and surgery.

Shares of Vivus were halted on Nasdaq on Wednesday pending the outcome of the FDA panel meeting. They closed at $10.55 on Tuesday, well above the stock?s low around $4.70 after the pill was first rejected.

SAFETY RISKS

FDA staff presenting on Wednesday said the key issues with Qnexa were about safety, not efficacy.

Staff reviewers have said patients taking the drug had more safety problems, including memory loss and higher heart rates, than those on a placebo, and some of these problems could get worse over time.

They have also noted that exposure to one of the ingredients in Qnexa has been linked to a higher rate of birth defects.

A Vivus study showed topiramate caused a higher rate of oral clefts in infants of women taking the drug during pregnancy, and the company said it would limit Qnexa to women who are not pregnant.

The FDA has said the rate of potential birth defects is about two to five times higher with topiramate than with placebo.

Vivus officials said obesity, and its common symptom diabetes, come with their own risks to pregnancy, such as stillbirth, premature birth and other complications.

The FDA and the company generally agreed on a program to mitigate the drug?s risks to pregnant women, including limiting the drug to certified pharmacies and training doctors who would prescribe it.

Panelists will discuss whether they think the program is stringent enough to protect patients from the risk of birth defects.

In clinical trials, Qnexa also increased patients? heartbeats, leading to fears it may have negative effects on the heart. However, Vivus said the drug also reduced blood pressure, and a link between heartbeat and heart health was not conclusive.

Mu was first founded in 1992 as Theater Mu, a theater company dedicated to bringing Asian American voices to the stage in the Twin Cities at a time when Asian American theater did not exist in the area and the Asian American community was rarely recognized. After forming Mu Daiko, a taiko drumming ensemble, the company rebranded itself as Mu Performing Arts, reflecting their broad artistic base of theater, taiko, and artist development. Mu Performing Arts remains Minnesota?s only pan-Asian performing arts organization, and has grown into the second largest Asian American performing arts company in the United States. In 2011, Mu Performing Arts published a new anthology of plays through Temple University Press, Asian American Plays for a New Generation. NASA video flies you through cracking glacier

A new video takes viewers on a stunning ride through a giant and ever-growing canyon of Antarctic ice that marks the birth of an enormous iceberg.

The Pine Island Glacier ice shelf in western Antarctica is in the process of "calving" a massive iceberg that, when it breaks away, will have an area of about 350 square miles (900 square kilometers) ? 15 times the size of Manhattan. A new NASA video provides a hair-raising view of the jagged-edged fissure up close.?

The animation uses data collected during late 2011 research flights over the Antarctic ice, when the crack was first discovered. At the time, the 18-mile (28-km) rift was about 180 feet (55 meters) across and 150 feet (45 meters) deep.

A satellite image of the crack snapped in November showed it was visible from space, and still growing.

Yet despite its impressive dimensions, the crack is fairly dainty in light of the Pine Island Glacier ice shelf's vast proportions. On the floating front end of the Pine Island Glacier, the ice shelf is roughly 1,235 square miles (2,300 square kilometers) across and nearly a third of a mile (500 meters) thick.

The recent discovery that the glacier that feeds it has markedly sped up over the last decade has provoked a flurry of research interest. The sudden changes are almost undoubtedly caused by climate change and warming oceans in the region.

The Pine Island Glacier is now one of the fastest moving in Antarctica, and NASA scientists say that every year it is losing ice. ?

The thinning and increasingly speedy glacier and several of its closest neighbors in West Antarctica are responsible for 7 percent of global sea level rise in recent years.

Glaciers are essentially slow-moving rivers of ice that move frozen water from the continent's interior out to the ocean.

If they accelerate, glaciers dump more ice into the sea, raising the ocean in the same way an ice cube dropped into a glass of water pushes the liquid higher.

However, the calving iceberg itself is the result of a cyclical process, not climate change, scientists say.

And although the nascent iceberg is quite large, scientists said its breadth isn't anything out of the ordinary.

In fact, researchers had been expecting the ice shelf to produce a large iceberg sometime soon.

The ice shelf last produced large icebergs in 2001 and 2007, and these calving events appear to happen on a roughly decade-long cycle.

He said the push was part of the force's efforts to secure the Somali capital by cutting off the al Shabaab's ability to infiltrate and mount attacks on the city and its people.

The troops took Al Janal hill near the city's main airport as well as the Maslah building that sits on the road to Afgoye, an al Shabaab stronghold, he said.

"Operations are ongoing to expand the zone of security in Mogadishu," Nduwumunsi said in a statement.

However, officials at Al Shabaab denied the claim that their strongholds had been captured by the AU forces, and said they had killed AU soldiers during the fighting.

"We killed 7 Burundians in today's fighting," Sheikh Abdiasis Abu Musab, the spokesman for al Shabaab's military operation, told Reuters. "AMISOM is lying, they have not captured our positions," he added.

Al Shabaab, which wants to impose its harsh interpretation of sharia, the Islamic moral and legal code, relinquished control of the coastal capital in August, under pressure from

The Islamist fighters have since then shifted to towns outside the capital and switched their tactics to guerrilla-style warfare, using roadside bombs, grenade attacks and hit-and-run raids against government installations in Mogadishu.

Roads leading to al Shabaab-controlled towns of Afgoi, Elasha, Lafole, and Km 13, a small town located a short distance south of Mogadishu, were cut off by the fighting, residents said.

Ali Musa, a rescue official, said access from the southern towns to Mogadishu had been cut off.

"Shells have landed on Km 13 and near Elasha town. Most of the people are on board mini-buses. We are fleeing and yet we have no way out," he said.

The rebels continue to hold swathes of central and southern Somalia but are being squeezed out of some areas by Kenyan and Ethiopian troops, which have launched incursions inside Somalia in support of the beleaguered government.
