My husband's story is a movie of the week...Mom had affair with married man who told her he was sterile, she got pregnant, ran off to hide pregnancy, had to return for grandfather's funeral and her whole family found out she was hiding the pregnancy, husband born with birth defects, she placed him for adoption (had been her plan prior to the birth defects), no one adopted him at birth, he went into the foster care system, lived with one family for 4 years, moved with them to another state when they decided they couldn't raise him and put him on a plane with a caseworker he didn't know to move back home, finally adopted at 8 years old, had 14 surgeries to fix his birth defects, skipped two grades b/c he was so smart, went to college and became a lawyer.
My CW said she was relieved that his story was not as perfect as mine as she would have worried about if we knew how to deal with conflict. But she saw that he would definitely know how to deal with adversity and help these kids through their struggles.
So I think a less than perfect background has its advantages and I would hope that most SWs would be able to recognize that!
