The Shenzhou 9 parachuted to a landing on the grasslands of the country's sprawling Inner Mongolia region at about 10 a.m. (0200 GMT). China declared the first manned mission to the Tiangong 1 module ? the space program's longest and most challenging yet ? a major stride ahead for the country's ambitious space program.

About an hour later, mission commander and veteran astronaut Jing Haipeng, 45, emerged from the capsule, followed by crew mates Liu Wang, 43, and 33-year-old Liu Yang, China's first female astronaut.

The three, all experienced air force pilots, were lifted on to folding chairs and appeared in good health. They smiled, waved, chatted and saluted as state television ran live footage from the landing site.

"Tiangong 1, our home in space, was comfortable and pleasant. We're very proud of our nation," Liu Yang told national broadcaster CCTV.

Space program commander, Gen. Chang Wanchuan, declared the astronauts in good health and declared the mission "completely successful."

He was followed by Premier Wen Jiabao, who said the mission marked "absolutely important progress" for the space program.

The mission had included both remote control and piloted dockings with the module and extensive medical monitoring of the astronauts as part of preparations for manning a permanent space station.

China's next goals include another manned mission to the module originally scheduled for later this year but which may be delayed depending on an evaluation of the Shenzhou 9 mission and the condition of the Tiangong 1. China has been extremely cautious and methodical in its manned missions, with more than three years passing since the previous one, and all four have been relatively problem-free.

Chen Shanguang, director for the Chinese Astronaut Research and Training Center, told a news conference that preparations and selection of astronauts were already under way for the Shenzhou 10 mission.

Tiangong 1 is due to be retired in a few years and replaced with a permanent space station around 2020 that will weigh about 60 tons, slightly smaller than NASA's Skylab of the 1970s and about one-sixth the size of the 16-nation International Space Station that China was barred from participating in, largely on objections from the United States. Possible future missions could include sending a rover to the moon, possibly followed by a manned lunar mission. Launched June 16 from the Jiuquan center on the edge of the Gobi desert in northern China, Shenzhou 9 is the latest success for China's manned space program that launched its first astronaut, Yang Liwei, into space in 2003, making China just the third nation after Russia and the U.S. to achieve that feat. China would also be the third country after the United States and Russia to send independently maintained space stations into orbit.

Earlier in the week, a spokeswoman said China spent 20 billion yuan ($3.1 billion) on its space program between 1992 and 2005 ? a rare admission for a program with close links to the secretive military. By the time the next Shenzhou mission is completed, Beijing will have spent an additional 19 billion yuan ($3 billion), the spokeswoman said.

Wang Zhaoyao, director of China's manned space program office, said the program mirrors the rising global status of China.

"For any country, for any people, a space program is indispensable," Wang said.

VIDEO: Creating 'Policy Change Agents' to Reduce Latino Childhood

In its effort to reduce the Latino childhood obesity epidemic, Salud America!?through the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF)?funded 20 pilot research projects to build the field of Latino researchers and increase evidence to fight Latino childhood obesity.

The resulting 20 Salud America! pilot grantees have since tested innovative interventions and evaluations in Latino childhood nutrition, fitness and policy. The grants are ?career-builders,? helping grantees leverage their data to get a foothold at their institutions, as well as embark on larger-scale work based off their successful pilot results.

The 20 grantees already have accrued more than $30 million in new funding, and more proposals are in review and development.

They also are sharing their individual research briefs (featuring preliminary research and policy implications) with local, regional and national policymakers.

Meanwhile, grantees also helped develop the Policy Contribution Spectra model, which visually illustrates how researchers can work in and between different levels in the policy development process?thus defining and measuring policy contribution. Grantees worked with a spectra expert to see how their work contributes to policy development, opening pilots? eyes to innovative ways they can influence policy even when their pilot project expires.

Watch how far the grantees have become sort of ?policy change agents?:

Salud America! The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) Research Network to Prevent Obesity Among Latino Children, is led by the Institute for Health Promotion Research (IHPR) at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, the team behind SaludToday. Salud America! has built a network?an online community?of nearly 2,000 researchers, academics, community leaders and other advocates dedicated to reversing Latino childhood obesity.

Atari Is 40 Years Old And I Still Can?t Beat The Dragon In Adventure

Atari_PongIt was 40 years ago yesterday that Atari's Nolan Bushnell taught the world to play. Bushnell, an engineer and game programmer, built and sold Atari in the late 1970s, ushering in the era of the video game and changing the way kids spent nice summer days. Atari is 40 years old this month and there have been a number of interviews and encomiums with Bushnell. Bushnell installed his first game, Pong, at Andy Capp?s bar in Silicon Valley where drinkers lined up to drop quarters into the first bit of video entertainment. The company roared through the 1970s and then petered out in the early 80s as competitors created more interesting and visually complex systems and games.

Is RIM selling its BlackBerry handset business?

The former king of the smartphone world is reportedly looking to split its company in two, with the hardware arm headed one way and the software arm another

Ailing BlackBerry-manufacturer Research in Motion is looking to sell off its hardware business, according to a report from British newspaper The Sunday Times?(subscription required). Potential buyers for its phone division allegedly include Facebook and Amazon. Meanwhile the Canadian company is renewing its focus on developing and licensing its proprietary messaging software ? such as BlackBerry Messenger and email ? to other companies. The Sunday Times report, however, doesn't cite any sources, although RIM's relatively new CEO Thorsten Hein once said that the firm was in need of "substantial change." Is RIM splitting in two?

The writing is on the wall: RIM recently hired JPMorgan and RBC Capital as business advisors, says Steven Musil at CNET. The company has "been struggling to bring back lost market share" now that Apple and Android rule the industry, and the most recent earnings report showed $125 million in losses for the fourth-quarter. RIM said publicly that it's looking at "strategic business-model alternatives"; essentially, that's "corporate-speak" for exploring a potential sale. Don't be surprised.
"RIM reportedly considering splitting company in two"

SEE MORE: Should you pay more for talking less on your phone?

A split would actually hurt both RIM divisions:?In RIM's case, splitting the company into two divisions could be "dangerous" for the other,?says Zach Whittaker at ZDNet: BlackBerry smartphones need the data network for email and browsing, while RIM's data network is "completely worthless" without BlackBerry phones to anchor it. Take a look at Palm, a now-defunct phone manufacturer RIM is often compared to. In the mid-2000s, Palm famously split its hardware division from its software arm. "If history is to be our guide, RIM could be facing a similar downfall." RIM may be better off selling itself to a single company like Microsoft.
"RIM considers split, handset unit sell-off: Palm 'Groundhog Day?'"

RIM should sell its phone division... but only to Facebook: The company's hardware business is definitely troubled, says Sean Ludwig at VentureBeat. A sale to Facebook would make sense because the social network is already rumored to be building its own Facebook Phone. "RIM already has the infrastructure set up to build large quantities of phones, so it could be a smart investment" for Zuckerberg and crew. For RIM, that could be something to like.
"RIM might sell its handset business to Facebook or Amazon"

(AP) ? Debby flooded homes, an animal shelter and closed parts of the main interstate highway across northern Florida on as the storm crept closer to the state, dropping more than two feet of rain in one sparsely populated area.

The tropical storm promised to bring more winds, rain and the possibility of flooding to the already saturated state. It was forecast to make landfall by early Wednesday, cross Florida and head into the Atlantic on Thursday.

The center of the storm was about 35 miles off the coast and moving northeast at 6 mph. Debby was weakening and had maximum sustained winds near 40 mph, barely a tropical storm.

"Even though the winds are coming down, the rain threat continues," said James Franklin, a hurricane specialist at the National Hurricane Center. "We expect another 4 to 8 inches, in some of these areas up in north Florida, in particular."

Wakulla, a remote area in northwest Florida known for camping and canoeing, has had more than 26 inches over the past three days, according to the National Weather Service. Several other areas in northern Florida have received more than 10 inches.

The Florida Highway Patrol closed portions of Interstate 10 when troopers reported several areas of flooding on a roughly 50-mile stretch. Authorities warned motorists to use extreme caution on other parts of the highway.

Farther south, four puppies and a young dog drowned when a swollen creek flooded an animal shelter in the city of Starke. Officials placed sandbags and dug trenches outside to protect the shelter, but the water rose quickly Sunday night, The Florida Times-Union reported.

A manatee was found dead in the Tampa Bay area and wildlife crews were trying to rescue two others that had beached nearby. It wasn't immediately clear whether the storm contributed to the animals washing ashore.

Roads were washed out in the area and residents tried to salvage belongings from flooded homes in low-lying areas. At one point Monday, high winds and flooding worries prompted authorities to close two major routes over Tampa Bay into St. Petersburg.

The storm could also bring up to 10 inches of rain to southeastern Georgia.

At least one person was killed Sunday by a tornado spun off by the large storm system.

WFLA-TV reported that a young mother, Heather Town, died Sunday when her Highlands County home was lifted off its foundation and she and her baby girl were thrown into nearby woods. The mother was found clutching the child, who survived.

Alabama authorities searched for a South Carolina man who disappeared in the rough surf.

The bridge leading to St. George Island, a vacation spot along the Panhandle, was closed to everyone except residents, renters and business owners to keep looters out. The island had no power, and palm trees had been blown down, but roads were passable.

"Most true islanders are hanging in there because they know that you may or may not be able to get back to your home when you need to," said David Walker, an island resident having a beer at Eddy Teach's bar. He said he had been through many storms on the island and Debby was on the weaker end of the scale.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott declared a statewide emergency, allowing authorities to put laws against price-gouging into effect and override bureaucratic hurdles to deal with the storm.

A tropical storm warning remained in effect Tuesday morning for about 450 miles of coastline, from Mexico Beach in the Panhandle to Englewood, south of Sarasota.

Lil Scrappy And Stevie J's 'Love & Hip-Hop' Fight 'A Real Situation'

Scrappy tells 'RapFix Live' about the drama, denying rumors the show is scripted.
By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway

Lil Scrappy
Photo:

You can expect the female cast of"Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta" to kick up some dust this season, but the guys get into their fair share of drama as well. A preview trailer for the rest of the upcoming season shows Lil Scrappy and record producer Stevie J. getting into a heated argument. Of course the tease is cut so we don't see much of the action, but the clip does show an agitated Scrap punching a wall after he and Stevie go nose-to-nose.

"It was a situation; it was a real situation," Scrap said when he appeared on "RapFix Live" on Wednesday.

According to Scrappy, the argument began after Stevie disrespected recurring castmember Erica, Scrappy's child's mother. The ATL MC feels that if Stevie had a problem with Erica, he should've bypassed her and addressed Scrappy instead. "Like I told him, you can walk off, you don't gotta disrespect no female," he said. "If you really wanna do something, ask her where her man at and tell him you wanna throw hands, you wanna take the fade, and I would've been happy to do that." Though Stevie and Scrappy are accomplished musicians and both now reside in the same city, Scrap says prior to the show neither he nor Erica had a personal connection to the multiplatinum producer, who has done work for the likes of Diddy, Jay-Z and Mariah Carey. "He didn't even ask — he didn't know who she was. All he knew is she was a part of the situation and he wanted to pop off," Scrappy said.

The "Money in the Bank" MC wouldn't give away the details of the fisticuffs, but he did shoot down whispers that he, his mother and his child's mother were following a script. "I don't know about the whole show and how [Stevie J.] do his end. I know my team Scrappy — we real on that side," he said.

Do you believe that "Love & Hip Hop" is scripted? Sound off in the comments!

Think you have a sluggish metabolism?

Find out for sure by having your resting metabolic rate (RMR) measured. The Student Health Services Campus Wellness registered dietitians have a great tool?MedGem?that measures RMR. The results?your specific metabolism?will help the dietitian determine exactly how many calories you really need for adequate energy and weight control.

?

Your RMR is the amount of calories you burn throughout the day in order to function properly. In essence, it is the minimum amount of calories a person needs to consume per day. Daily activities will lead to the body burning additional calories, which are not included in the RMR results. Your RMR is unique and can account for up to 75% of the calories you burn each day. The remaining 25% is influenced by activities of daily living and physical activity. Knowing your unique RMR allows you to establish a calorie budget that will help you reach your weight loss goals without the one-size-fits-all approach.

?

For the test, you will breathe into a small, handheld device for 10 to 15 minutes. You will receive your results and an explanation during a one-on-one consultation with the dietitian following the procedure. Testing and consultation will last approximately one hour.

Prior to the test:

????????? Do not eat, exercise or drink caffeinated beverages for 4 hours before the test.

????????? Rest for 10-15 minutes.

????????? Do not consume nutritional stimulants, including ephedra,?Ma Huang or pseudoephedrine for 4 hours before the test.

????????? Do not use nicotine for at least 1 hour before the test.

Schedule a morning appointment with a dietitian for metabolic testing by calling the Thomson Student Health Center at 803-777-3175. There is a $25 fee for students and $75 fee for faculty and staff, which covers RMR testing and the consultation that follows.

Thirtysomethings flex their number sense

Insight into quantities maxes out in adulthood and may influence math achievement

Web edition : 3:03 pm

Even 6-month-old babies can rapidly estimate approximate numbers of items without counting. But surprisingly, an apparently inborn sense for numbers doesn?t top out until around age 30.

Number sense precision gradually declines after that, generally falling to preteen levels by about age 70, say psychologist Justin Halberda of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore and his colleagues. They report the findings, based on Internet testing of more than 10,000 volunteers ages 11 to 85, online the week of June 25 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

?I expected to see some improvement in number sense into preschool or maybe early elementary school, but not up to age 30,? Halberda says.

Evidence of critical mental abilities peaking after young adulthood is rare but has been reported for face memory (SN: 1/1/11, p. 16).

Participants in the new study completed a game that tested the precision of their number sense, or how accurately they could assess quantities. Volunteers saw a series of images showing mixes of blue and yellow dots and judged which color dot was more numerous. Each dot array appeared for a fraction of a second.

In some dot arrays, one color greatly outnumbered the other. In other arrays, one color slightly outnumbered the other.

Test-takers of the same age showed large differences in how accurately they could assess the dots, with the highest average scores coming around age 30, the researchers report. Teens and adults with a robust number sense reported doing moderately better at math in school and on the math portion of the SAT than those with a weak number sense.

Everyday activities, such as quickly deciding which of several supermarket check-out lines is shortest, may strengthen a person?s number sense, Halberda says. His team is devising an action video game containing number-related decisions that will aim to boost children?s number sense precision.

?Training to make numerosity discriminations could improve mathematics learning, whether it turns out that the ability to estimate quantities is the foundation for learning about numbers or just improves math confidence,? says cognitive neuropsychologist Brian Butterworth of University College London.?

Previous research had linked a keen number sense to superior math achievement in elementary school (SN: 9/27/08, p. 10).

Number sense is one of many influences on math performance in school and throughout life, Halberda says. A long-term study of U.S. and British youngsters published online June 14 in Psychological Science finds, for instance, that students who grasp fractions and division in grade school do particularly well in all forms of high school math.

NJ airport fire having ripple effect on U.S. flights

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) ? Violent thunderstorms along the East Coast and a fire at an airport technical center in southern New Jersey combined to wreak havoc on flights around the country Friday night, leading one airline executive to tweet that "it will not be a pretty evening."

The fire started at a little after noon at the William J. Hughes Technical Center at Atlantic City International Airport and forced the evacuation of 1,600 people who work at the complex, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

The agency said the fire made some traffic flow systems unavailable, though it said the fire didn't affect systems used to directly control air traffic. Traffic flow was moved to a backup system and performed manually during the transfer, the FAA said.

The system chiefly affected by the fire is used to automatically implement "ground stops" and "ground delays" ? orders air traffic controllers may give to hold certain aircraft on the ground at airports instead of allowing them to take off as scheduled, or to delay their departure.

For example, if bad weather is causing a backup of planes trying to land at Northeast airports, FAA might order planes in Miami or Dallas or on the West Coast to hold on the ground until the backup is reduced. Since the fire disrupted the system that automatically implements grounds stops and delays, FAA personnel were calling airlines and air traffic control facilities around the country to issue the orders.

Rob Maruster, JetBlue's chief operating officer, tweeted Friday, "It will not be a pretty evening, unfortunately."

JetBlue had 66 flights that had either been delayed or canceled Friday evening, but that number was expected to grow into Saturday, said airline spokeswoman Jenny Dervin.

"That's not a final number by any means," she said.

Dervin attributed about half the JetBlue delays and cancellation to intense thunderstorms in the East and the other half to the FAA technical center fire.

For example, the fire disrupted some tower operations and flight management systems like metering ? the automated arrival rate of aircraft into New York-area airports ? which reduces the efficiency of airports and causes flights to back up, she said.

"It's back-office support functions, but when it goes down ? especially in bad weather ? it just compounds the problem," Dervin said.

Flight delays at New York City's three major airports ? LaGuardia, JFK and Newark Liberty ? ranged from 80 minutes to 2? hours Friday evening, while delays at Boston's Logan Airport were averaging more than an hour and 45 minutes. Severe thunderstorms swept through the area in the late afternoon, carrying 60 mph winds and dropping as much as 5 inches of rain in some parts of New Jersey.

In Atlanta, John Crenshaw, 46, had hoped to be in Britain in time to watch the Boodles, an exhibition tennis tournament in Buckinghamshire this weekend but was delayed on the tarmac at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on Friday because of the fire in Atlantic City.

"I was supposed to go Atlanta to Boston and Boston to London, but we were still on the runway," he told AP by phone from the airport, where he was waiting to board a Delta direct flight to London's Heathrow Airport that later left.

He said his initial flight never took off and that as it taxied back to the gate, the pilot announced "there was an FAA computer problem and that it was the most widespread one since 9/11."

Though he won't be able to make the Boodles ? "That's $350 bucks down the drain," he said ? Crenshaw did not despair, since he'll be in London by Saturday regardless.

"I'm going to Wimbledon," he said. "I have center court tickets on Tuesday so that's all that matters. As long as I am there by Tuesday, I guess all is not lost."

Cyanide-Producing GM Grass Linked To Texas Cattle Deaths

Peristaltic writes "Scientists at the U.S. Department of Agriculture are trying to determine if an unexpected mutation in a popular GM grass, Tifton 85, is responsible for the sudden deaths of a small herd of cattle in Elgin, Texas three weeks ago. The grass has been used for grazing since 1992 without incident, however after a severe drought last year in Texas, the grass started producing cyanide in sufficient quantities to kill a small herd of cattle in Elgin, Texas. Testing has found the cyanide-producing grass in nearby fields as well." Update: 06/23 22:59 GMT by T : Reader Jon Cousins writes with a correction that means the headline above is inaccurate for including "GM." Tifton 85, he writes, is "absolutely not genetically modified. It's a conventionally bred hybrid."

Higgs boson buzz goes through ups and downs

CERN / CMS Collaboration

A computer graphic shows a typical Higgs boson candidate event, including two high-energy photons whose energy (depicted by red towers) is measured in the Compact Muon Solenoid's electromagnetic calorimeter. The yellow lines are the measured tracks of other particles produced in the collision. The pale blue volume represents the CMS' crystal calorimeter barrel.

By Alan Boyle

A week ago, sources started passing the word that physicists were "fired up" about further evidence for the existence of the Higgs boson, the last undiscovered particle predicted by the Standard Model and the main quarry for the $10 billion Large Hadron Collider.

That blaze of buzz reached a high point this week, when Columbia mathematician Peter Woit reported "reliable rumors"?that the confidence level for a detection of the Higgs' signature in the mass range of around 125 billion electron-volts, or 125 GeV, was increasing.

"CERN will soon have to decide how to spin this: will they announce discovery of the Higgs, or will they wait for some overwhelmingly convincing standard to be met, such as 5 sigma in at least one channel of one experiment?" Woit wrote.

"Sigma" refers to the statistical confidence that a given result is more than a fluke, with 5 sigma serving as the gold standard for a discovery. If you're a Higgs-watcher, you'll be hearing a lot about sigma in the next couple of weeks, leading up to the International Conference on High-Energy Physics, or ICHEP, in Australia from July 4 to 11. That's when the LHC's teams are due to provide a status report on the search for the Higgs.?

The Higgs hunt is hot because physicists have hypothesized about the boson for 40 years as part of the mechanism by which some particles acquire mass while others don't. The Higgs is so fundamental to the frontier of physics that Fermilab's Leon Lederman once called it the "God Particle"?? a term that most other physicists positively hate.?Finding it in the mass range where it's expected to be would serve as solid confirmation for the Standard Model, one of the most successful theories in the history of science. Not finding it would be more interesting: Physicists would have to consider some other mechanism, outside the Standard Model, to explain particle mass. And there's nothing theorists love more than a challenge like that.

In December, the teams behind the ATLAS and CMS detectors reported "tantalizing hints" of a Higgs detection at 125 GeV, with confidence levels of 3.6 sigma for ATLAS and 2.6 sigma for CMS. If the additional observations made since then show the same sorts of hints, those sigma levels should go up?? and that's been the gist of the buzz over the last week or so. For science geeks, that's a big deal, or at least a big meme: so big that the hashtag #HiggsRumors was for a time on top of Twitter's trending list, Discovery News' Jennifer Ouelette noted.

A lot of that trending took place because of the in-jokes spawned by the original buzz ??which has now fallen to a steady hum, thanks to a string of reality checks.

"Please do not believe the blogs," ATLAS spokeswoman Fabiola Gianotti told The New York Times. "I am very surprised that rumors appear on a subject that is really evolving daily," CMS spokesman Guido Tonelli told Science News. "The experimenters can't possibly have their data in presentable form yet, so the rumors can't be correct in every detail," Rutgers theoretical physicist Matt Strassler observed on his blog.

Union College physicist Chad Orzel, the author of "How to Teach Relativity to Your Dog," said the celebrity-level hype was?"the price of success":

"I mean, it?s not an accident that there?s a lot of excitement about the maybe-sorta-kinda discovery of the Higgs. This is the product of years of relentless hype from the particle physics community. They've been talking about this goddamn particle for longer than I've been running this blog, and it's finally percolated out into the general public consciousness enough that buzz about it can trend on Twitter. Complaining that your persistent effort to get people to care about particle physics esoterica has led to people being excited about particle physics esoterica seems more than a little churlish.

"So, lighten up. Revel in the success of your hype machine. God knows, if there were a Twitter trending topic about Bose-Einstein Condensation or anything else in atomic physics, I?d do the Happy Dance all the way down the hall. You?ve worked hard to make your elusive particle a celebrity, now reap the rewards."

The true reaping will come in a couple of weeks.?As Reuters' Robert Evans reported, the most recent readings from ATLAS and CMS are being analyzed in isolation, so that one team's conclusions don't influence the other team. Until the ICHEP actually takes place, hype is just about all we'll hear about. But in the meantime, get ready for the real news by reviewing these resources:

Update for 1 p.m. ET June 22: Europe's CERN particle-physics center just announced that the big update on the Higgs search will come on July 4, during a seminar at 3 a.m. ET that's tied to the start of the ICHEP conference.?

"We now have more than double the data we had last year," CERN's director for research and computing, Sergio Bertolucci, was quoted as saying. "That should be enough to see whether the trends we were seeing in the 2011 data are still there, or whether they?ve gone away. It?s a very exciting time."

CERN said that if a new particle is discovered, the ATLAS and CMS teams will need more time to ascertain whether it's the Higgs.

"It's a bit like spotting a familiar face from afar," CERN Director General Rolf Heuer explained. "Sometimes you need closer inspection to find out whether it?s really your best friend, or actually your best friend's twin."

CERN said physicists at the conference in Melbourne will be able to join the seminar via a live two-way link. The seminar will be followed by a news conference at CERN. There'll be a webcast available via?http://webcast.cern.ch. Stay tuned...

Gov. Jindal signs electronic proof of vehicle insurance bill into law ...

BATON ROUGE -- As of Aug. 1, drivers will be able to show proof of insurance electronically on cell phones or other electronic devices if their insurers send the data that way. Gov. Bobby Jindal has signed into law House Bill 1130 by Rep. Greg Cromer, R-Slidell, which allows a driver to receive and use the electronic insurance data as well as the traditional insurance card as proof of auto liability insurance.

Cromer's bill defines a "mobile electronic device" as any "small, hand-held computing or communications device that has a display screen with touch input or a miniature keyboard."

The legislation, which flew through the Legislature with no votes against it, says that displaying proof of insurance on an electronic device does not allow a police officer to have access to "any other part" of the device while checking for insurance coverage.

Cromer said during the session that, with more companies going to an electronic format for proof of insurance, the law had to change so that the new version would be as legally acceptable as the standard insurance cards.

The bill also says that paper copies, including the insurance card or a copy of it, can still be used as proof of insurance. It says a court or Office of Motor Vehicle officials may require the paper cards to be produced.

(AP) ? Tenor sax legend Sonny Rollins was a triple winner Wednesday at the annual Jazz Awards, garnering musician of the year honors for the second straight year.

Rollins also repeated as the top tenor saxophonist. His latest CD, "Road Shows, Vol. 2," consisting of live recordings from concerts in Japan and his September 2010 80th birthday concert in New York highlighted by a first-ever public performance with free jazz visionary and alto saxophonist Ornette Coleman, was chosen the year's best jazz recording.

"I was born with some talent for which I am grateful," Rollins said in a statement read from the stage at the Blue Note jazz club by emcee Josh Jackson, host of WBGO's jazz music magazine "The Checkout."

"I copied and learned from my predecessors and I'm grateful to them, and I gratefully accept this award," said Rollins, who could not attend the ceremony because he was moving to a new home in upstate New York.

Saxophonist Joe Lovano's Us Five, featuring Grammy-winner Esperanza Spalding on bass and James Weidman on piano, was chosen the best small ensemble for the third consecutive year. The large ensemble honors went to the Mingus Big Band, dedicated to playing the compositions of the late bassist Charles Mingus.

Israeli-born Anat Cohen was a double winner as top clarinetist and multi-reeds player. Cohen said, "It's an immense pleasure and a never-ending journey to be making music with some of the most adventurous, creative, passionate people we call jazz musicians."

Two Indian-American musicians also took home awards in their instrumental categories ? pianist Vijay Iyer and alto saxophonist Rudresh Manhanthappa.

Bassist Ben Williams, who released his debut album "State of Art" last year after winning the 2009 Thelonious Monk International Competition, was honored as the top up-and-coming artist.

Hard bop pianist-composer Horace Silver, known for creating such standards as "The Preacher," ''Sister Sadie," and "Song For My Father," received the award for lifetime achievement in jazz. Poet and political activist Amiri Baraka was recognized with the award for lifetime achievement in jazz journalism.

Other winners, chosen in voting by members of the Jazz Journalists Association, included Ambrose Akinmusire (trumpet), Wycliffe Gordon (trombone), Bill Frisell (guitar), Regina Carter (violin), Christian McBride (bass), Gretchen Parlato (female singer), Kurt Elling (male singer), Roy Haynes (drums), Maria Schneider (composer/arranger), Gary Smulyan (baritone saxophone) and Jane Ira Bloom (soprano saxophone).
