And you thought that Nintendo World Championships gold cartridge would make a nice start to the retirement fund. An eBay auction from tjcurtin1 is offering a prototype NES cartridge for the US release of The Legend of Zelda at a Buy It Now price of $150,000, or roughly ten times more than the typical final bid that Price Charting quotes for a typical NWC cart. While it looks like an unassuming yellow chunk of plastic, it's actually a Nintendo of America copy from February 23, 1987 -- half a year before the definitive action adventure reached the US market. The game still plays and can even save its game on the still functional, industry-first battery backup. Just remember that it's not necessarily going to reveal any design secrets from Shigeru Miyamoto or Takashi Tezuka: the seller warns that he can't see any practical differences between the early copy and the (also included) shipping version. Anyone well-heeled enough to buy the prototype is therefore going solely for the collector's value. But for those determined to be the coolest kid on any block about 25 years late, there's only one way to go.

Is the Indian American family changing? | IndiaPost

An increasing number of young adults will be taking care of elderly parents in the next few years ? and that is not going to be a simple process. Where will the senior members in the family live? Do they move in with the children? If the children have transferable jobs, what happens? Do they uproot themselves and start all over again, adjusting to a new climate, a new environment? Will the daughter-in-law/son in-law cope with long term illness?
Some parents insist on staying with the son. What happens to the wife?s parents? What if they do not have a son and wish to stay with the daughter? Is it possible for everyone to stay together? How do you take care of sick parents when you have a job and children? Aging ? no matter how beautifully you age ? can be fraught with frustration, bitterness, anger and resentment.
A possible solution to this may be investing in a gated Indian-American community, like a cottage retirement center. Indian American professionals on the brink of retirement are already planning these projects; this may come with a swimming pool, a club room, tennis courts, a shopping center, a pharmacy and a place of worship. There are choices offering flexibility of care and service.
Older people often like to stay on their own in a safe and supporting community. However, this may be an expensive project and many people will not be able to afford it.
An Indian told me very honestly that she could not envisage living only with Indians and singing bhajans. She said she came to America to live in a diverse community. This idea of communal living was unappealing to her.
Another option. Retirement homes are becoming popular and a boon to those who wish to improve the quality of life as they grow older. There are homes to suit different budgets. One such is the Housing Urban Development Program run by the Federal Government. The rent is calculated as a percentage of your income, (30%) although it may vary from state to state. There are different eligibility requirements, but there are long waiting lists.
The World of Retirement Homes?
My work in California involved qualifying seniors for subsidized housing, the HUD program. It was in the process of interviewing applicants and families that I was startled to find that aging was fraught with heartrending problems.
Here was this 62-year-old Indian-American widow sobbing her heart out and pleading for accommodation. Her story was that she was being treated cruelly by the daughter-in-law and wished to live independently. She complained that she was never taken out on the weekends, the grandchildren barely spoke to her and when she was ill, she was terrified to tell her son.
Her daughter-in-law resented her presence, and thought she was not doing her fair share of work in household duties. The daughter-in-law also wanted her own parents to stay with her.
She also had a different story to tell, of a possibly domineering mother-in-law who was always finding fault, being possessive about her son, demanding a particular diet or frowning on late night parties. The truth is somewhere in between. Meanwhile, the lady needed counseling and help.
There were many such stories. Indian-American couples wanted to live independently but since they received assistance from the Government around $ 1000, their children took the money and insisted the parents/in-laws live with them. Oprah visiting the widows in northern India comes to mind. When Oprah asked if the children ever visited, she was told they did arrive once a month to collect the widowed mother?s pension!

Aging Parents, New Life Stories?
Here in America, even some well-to-do children find the extra money helpful and keep parents in the home, using them as baby sitters and to do a number of household tasks.
Many grandparents relish the role but there are an equal number of people who want to relax in their old age, travel a little, enjoy the company of other seniors and not monitor the babies, cook, and sit in front of the TV.
Some Indian seniors have told me that ?It is a traditional Indian thing to stay with children. What will our relatives back in India think if we live in a retirement home??
This couple came to me with their daughter who sincerely wanted them to live with her family. But the couple was adamant. They cherished their independence, needed privacy and did not want to live in a son-in-law?s home.
Unfortunately, they had tried to live with the son, but his wife resented their presence and there were bitter fights. So they left that home and were seeking housing. All went well and they moved into a housing facility.
A few months later, the man fell down and broke his hip. His wife did not drive so the daughter had to take time off from work and not only take him up and down to the hospital but prepare food and bring it over.
A month later the man needed surgery and there was an endless round of hospital visits, caring, transporting. The daughter wished they lived in her home which might have been more convenient, but they declined. The daughter called her life a living nightmare. Her brother could not help as he lived in Santa Barbara and she was in Los Angeles.
Some couples do exploit the system and insist they do not have any bank accounts to take advantage of the government largess. And yet the sons and daughters appear quite wealthy and have top professional jobs. Perhaps the parents have willed away their assets voluntarily or were pressured to do so. One never knows but despite the distressing scenarios, there are also many Indian-Americans who cherish their parents, honor and respect them, and remember with gratitude the sacrifices of the parents. They look after them with great care, whether they stay with them or elsewhere.
Tips For Starting Over
Some suggestions for those who find themselves isolated and abandoned: Try to find a Day Care Center; there are over 2000 of them in the country sponsored by the Government. Transport is provided. Here you will meet seniors, play board-games, cards, listen to music, watch dance performances, read books, or join a discussion group. And you even get a well-balanced meal. There is free counseling and even therapy.
If you are active you can volunteer at the local school, library, hospital, museum or place of worship. This may be a problem for those who cannot drive or do not have a car. Some cities have Senior Gatherings once a month where a light meal is provided; people meet and listen to a talk on health, or issues pertaining to aging.
This happens on a Saturday so some member of the family can do the drop off and the pickup. My friend Urmila Mukherjee has been getting a group together for over 15 years. They come from all regions of India and at any meeting you can hear a dozen languages. She recently took them on a cruise to Ensenada from Los Angeles, and another trip to Hawaii is in the works.
If you can drive seniors or carpool you can attend classes at the community college. Try Taichi, yoga, listen to a lecture on astronomy or world events. You can enroll for craft classes. Most classes are free. Or mentor a young student or tutor. Start a cookery class. Learn the computer. Browse websites that kindle your interest or passion. Offer to speak on India in your grand-children?s school.
At the age of 80, my friend Prativadi Narasimhan acts in plays, travels 200 miles to do a HariKatha performance, has appeared in various commercials and even does a stint on the Jimmy Kimmel show. He rocks. So can you!
By embracing new roles, parents and children can reinvent the Indian-American family.

Tajik rebels surrender after threat of new assault

DUSHANBE (Reuters) - Rebels facing off against government troops in Tajikistan's volatile east began laying down their weapons on Sunday after the authorities threatened to launch a new offensive to capture a former warlord accused of killing a local security chief.

President Inomali Rakhmon had called a ceasefire late last Tuesday after heavy fighting, promising to pardon anyone who disarmed while demanding that the rebels handed over Tolib Ayombekov, the former warlord, along with three fighters.

A senior Tajik security official told Reuters on condition of anonymity on Sunday that the rebels had started to surrender at about 0200 GMT, handing over "dozens of guns".

"We now hope that everything will end peacefully," he said.

Tajikistan's interior ministry confirmed the news in a statement, saying: "Members of illegal armed units in the Gorno-Badakhshan region have started turning in their arms ... Those laying down their weapons are immediately amnestied."

Rakhmon had sent troops into the area on Tuesday in pursuit of former opposition field commander Ayombekov, accusing him of killing Major-General Abdullo Nazarov, the head of the Gorno-Badakhshan branch of the GKNB, successor of the Soviet-era KGB, on July 21.

Officials said the heavy fighting that followed killed 17 troops, 30 rebels and one civilian, in violence that raised concerns about the stability of the majority Muslim nation.

On Saturday - after several days of talks - the authorities issued a final warning, telling the rebels they would launch a new large-scale military offensive against them unless they surrendered.

"MAIN THING IS THAT THIS NOW ENDS PEACEFULLY"

However, not all of the authorities' demands were met.

"At this stage, there is no talk about the surrender of Ayombekov and other rebels accused of killing Nazarov," the same security source told Reuters on Sunday. "Militants say they are in Afghanistan, and we also do not exclude this."

"The main thing is that this (stand-off) now ends peacefully, and we will return to Ayombekov's capture later."

After Nazarov was killed, the government sent helicopters, armored vehicles and thousands of troops into the area. Nazarov's agency had accused Ayombekov's gang of smuggling drugs, tobacco and precious stones.

Ayombekov, who fought against Rakhmon in a 1992-97 civil war before receiving a government job in the peace deal that ended the conflict, denied any involvement in Nazarov's killing.

Fearing possible infiltration of Taliban-linked fighters who support Ayombekov, Tajikistan closed all its border crossings with Afghanistan, only allowing trucks carrying cargo for NATO troops there to pass.

Some analysts said that the assault - the first military operation on such a scale in almost two years - was a show of force by Rakhmon, whose control over parts of the Central Asian state remains tenuous 15 years after the end of the civil war.

Separated from Afghanistan by the Pyandzh river, Gorno-Badakhshan is an autonomous region where the authority of the central government is particularly fragile. Most of its 250,000 inhabitants sided with the opposition during the civil war.

Tajikistan is the poorest of 15 former Soviet republics. Tens of thousands died in its civil war, in which Rakhmon's Moscow-backed troops fought a loosely aligned opposition that included many Islamist fighters.

Former imperial master Russia still has 6,000 troops stationed in Tajikistan, its largest military deployment abroad and one which is meant to act as a bulwark against the threat of Islamist violence spilling across the Afghan border when NATO pulls its troops out in 2014.

Community Kitchen: Barbecue Sauce

I am from the Northeast, where barbecue is something that happens to other people. Sure, I?d had the odd experience visiting my grandparents in North Carolina, but as a general rule I always regarded barbecue as the sort of exotic fare that is better to read about than to actually eat, like Turkish delight or head cheese.

When I moved to Missouri, I was pleased, if somewhat surprised, at the ubiquity of proper barbecue ? which is to say meat that has been cooked long, slow, and smoky. I would not say that I?ve become a connoisseur, but I?ve certainly become a fan. I also find myself married to a man who is on the verge of banning me from the kitchen altogether, since he seems to regard all non-smoked foods as a waste of time and entropy. Any occasion on which people gather for a meal seems to him a fine opportunity to fire up the smoker; I will not be surprised if we end up having pulled pork this Thanksgiving. I may have to learn how to make cocktails or something just so that I can feel as if I am contributing; in the meantime I just enjoy the ride.

This evening we had some friends over for dinner, which was, for Josh, merely an excuse to try out his smoking technique and a variety of sauces. His earlier experiments have paid off: the meat was tender, flavorful, and more or less falling apart, with crispy burnt ends that guests couldn?t help sneaking from the platter and eating with their hands. The sauces, which represented several different regions, sparked some lively debate among our guests as to which was the best. I favored the Lexington Dip, which was extremely vinegary and hot, but the South Carolina mustard-based sauce also had its proponents. All three were delicious ? and all I had to do was wash the dishes.

Note: All of these sauces should be prepared well ahead of time so that the flavors can meld. Three or four days ought to do it. You can use these sauces as a marinade, mop them onto the meat as it cooks, or just serve it along with the meat as a sauce.

LEXINGTON DIP

1 1/2 cup white vinegar (do not use cider vinegar)
1/4 cup ketchup
1/4 cup apple juice
? cup hot sauce, such as Sriracha
3 tablespoons light brown sugar
1/2 tablespoon salt
1 teaspoon crushed red pepper
1 teaspoon finely ground black pepper
Whisk together all the ingredients and store in the refrigerator until ready to serve.

SOUTH CAROLINA MUSTARD SAUCE

2 cups prepared yellow mustard
2/3 cup cider vinegar
3 tablespoons tomato paste
1/2 teaspoon hot sauce, such as Tabasco or Sriracha
? cup brown sugar
? cup white sugar
1 chicken bouillon cube
2 teaspoons dried rosemary leaves
1 teaspoon celery seed
3 teaspoons mustard powder
2 teaspoons onion powder
2 teaspoons garlic powder
1 teaspoon table salt
1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
Mix the wet ingredients together in a bowl. Crush the bouillon cube with a spoon in a bowl add it to the bowl. Crush the rosemary leaves and celery seed in a mortar & pestle or in a blender or coffee grinder and add to the bowl. Add the rest of the dry ingredients and mix thoroughly.

EAST CAROLINA KISS

1 1/2 cups of distilled vinegar (white or cider)

1 teaspoon hot sauce, such as Sriracha

2 tablespoons sugar (white, light brown, or dark brown ? we used brown, which I recommend)

1 tablespoon salt

2 teaspoons crushed red pepper

2 teaspoons finely ground black pepper

Pour all the ingredients into a jar and shake.

A glance at trial of feminist anti-Putin rockers

MOSCOW (AP) ? Three Russian feminist rockers rejected charges of hooliganism for performing a "punk prayer" in Moscow's main cathedral against Vladimir Putin's return as president as a trial against them opened in earnest on Monday. The charges could carry a punishment of up to seven years in prison.

The three members of the Pussy Riot band ? Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, 23, Maria Alekhina, 24, and Yekaterina Samutsevich, 29 ? have been in custody for five months since their February stunt. Their prosecution has caused a sharp public divide and drawn protests from rights groups who have declared them prisoners of conscience.

The trial began July 20 but the first sessions were devoted to procedural issues. On Monday, with the court turning to the substance of the case, Tolokonnikova and other defendants said in statements read by their lawyer that their goal was to express their resentment over Russian Orthodox Church Patriarch Kirill's support for Putin's rule.

They pleaded not guilty to the official charges of hooliganism driven by "religious hatred." Tolokonnikova said she felt sorry if some of the believers felt insulted by their act, but that they didn't mean to offend anyone. It wasn't clear how long the trial might last, but a court has recently ruled that the women should be kept in custody for another half-year. Two other participants in the performance haven't been identified and remain at large.

Here is a look at what the women did and background on the case:

THE "PUNK PRAYER"

Two weeks before March's presidential election five women dressed in brightly colored miniskirts and balaclavas ? masks that cover their faces entirely and leave only the eyes uncovered ? and took over the church's pulpit for less than a minute. They high-kicked and danced around while singing a song pleading "Virgin Mary, drive Putin away!" that also contained diatribes against the top Orthodox clergy. They bowed and blessed themselves as security guards arrived to take them out. The performance was videotaped and immediately became an Internet hit. The act followed a series of other recent performances by the group, including one from atop a bus and another one from a jail roof. Shortly before their church stunt, they became an Internet sensation for a song titled "Putin Chickens Out" from a spot on Red Square used in czarist Russia for announcing government decrees.

THE CHURCH

The Christ the Savior Cathedral, Moscow's main orthodox cathedral, was consecrated in 1883 to mark the Russian victory over Napoleon. It was blown up in 1931 as part of Soviet dictator Josef Stalin's anti-church campaign, and a plan called for building a giant Palace of Soviets in its place, complete with Stalin's statue perched on top. That plan was delayed by swampy ground at the site and then abandoned for good when World War II began. The site was turned instead into a sprawling outdoor swimming pool. After the Soviet collapse, the towering church was rebuilt with the help of public donations and was consecrated in 2000. It has since served as Moscow's main Orthodox cathedral, becoming a symbol of the restoration of the Orthodox Church's power.

THE RUSSIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH'S RESPONSE

Patriarch Kirill has condemned the rockers' act as "blasphemous" and denounced those believers who called for the church to forgive them. His stance reflects the church's growing clout and has raised concerns about its close connections to the government and its growing influence over decision-making.

PUBLIC DIVIDE

Russia's leading liberal politicians and some of the nation's most prominent cultural figures have strongly protested the trial and criticized the church for supporting the criminal case instead of showing clemency. Amnesty International has called the three women prisoners of conscience. At the same time, some Orthodox groups and many believers are urging strong punishment for an action they consider sacrilegious. A poll conducted in Moscow earlier this month found that half of respondents oppose the trial while 36 percent support it. The rest were undecided.

THE KREMLIN'S STANCE

Putin has avoided comment on the case, but many commentators believe that he has given his blessing to the prosecution of the three rockers as part of a crackdown on dissent following unprecedented protests in Moscow against his 12-year rule. Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said that it's up to the court to issue a verdict, but noted that some nations have even tougher punishment for that kind of action.

Apple is known as one of the most innovative companies in history, and they?re also very careful about protecting all of their bright ideas. This results in them constantly applying for patents for these inventions. More often than not, these patents never result in an actual product, but it?s fun to see the kinds of things that are brewing behind the scenes at the famously guarded Cupertino company.

One of those interesting ideas surfaced this week, when Apple was granted a patent covering iOS devices interacting with other machines via NFC, or Near Field Communication. NFC is basically a chip installed on a device that can wirelessly connect to a similarly equipped NFC device simply by putting the two devices close together. Sort of like Bluetooth, but simpler.

It?s been long rumored that NFC would make its way into the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad, and this latest patent covers some of the things Apple might expect to do with such technology. While this includes more mundane things like controlling your thermostat or turning on the sprinklers in the yard from your smartphone, they also have a couple of gaming-related applications in mind.

One shows an iOS device pairing with a game console controller itself, thus giving the ability to control the game from the controller to the Apple device. Several options for virtual onscreen controls are given for doing so. The second application shows an iOS device connecting directly to the game console itself, allowing you to control the system using iOS after pairing with the console via WiFi, infrared, or NFC.

Some pretty neat stuff, but like I said it may never come to fruition. However, with Apple?s subtle entry into the living room with Apple TV and game console makers taking more of an interest in involving smartphones into their overall game plan, it?s smart of Apple to cover their bases and it?ll be interesting to see if anything ever comes from this.

Vitamin D deficiency is associated with worse lung function and more rapid decline in lung function over time in smokers, suggesting that vitamin D may have a protective effect against the effects of smoking on lung function, according to a new study from researchers in Boston.

"We examined the relationship between vitamin D deficiency, smoking, lung function, and the rate of lung function decline over a 20 year period in a cohort of 626 adult white men from the Normative Aging Study," said lead author Nancy E. Lange, MD, MPH, of the Channing Laboratory, Brigham and Women's Hospital. "We found that vitamin D sufficiency (defined as serum vitamin D levels of >20 ng/ml) had a protective effect on lung function and the rate of lung function decline in smokers."

The findings were published online ahead of print publication in the American Thoracic Society's American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.

In the study, vitamin D levels were assessed at three different time points between 1984 and 2003, and lung function was assessed concurrently with spirometry.

In vitamin D deficient subjects, for each one unit increase in pack-years of smoking, mean forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) was 12 ml lower, compared with a mean reduction of 6.5 ml among subjects who were not vitamin D deficient. In longitudinal models, vitamin D deficiency exacerbated the effect of pack years of smoking on the decline in FEV1 over time.

No significant effect of vitamin D levels on lung function or lung function decline were observed in the overall study cohort, which included both smokers and non-smokers.

"Our results suggest that vitamin D might modify the damaging effects of smoking on lung function," said Dr. Lange. "These effects might be due to vitamin D's anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties."

The study has some limitations, including that the data is observational only and not a trial, that vitamin D levels fluctuate over time, and that the study has limited generalizability due to the cohort being all elderly men.

"If these results can be replicated in other studies, they could be of great public health importance," said Dr. Lange. "Future research should also examine whether vitamin D protects against lung damage from other sources, such as air pollution."

"While these results are intriguing, the health hazards associated with smoking far outweigh any protective effect that vitamin D may have on lung function ," said Alexander C. White MS, MD, chair of the American Thoracic Society's Tobacco Action Committee. "First and foremost, patients who smoke should be fully informed about the health consequences of smoking and in addition be given all possible assistance to help them quit smoking."

KANA acquires Ciboodle

KANA Software has acquired the process-based contact centre provider Ciboodle from the Sword Group.

The Ciboodle acquisition adds new complementary product offerings and industry expertise, extending and enhancing the overall KANA value proposition ? particularly around agent desktop, business process and case management in the contact centre, and social CRM communities on the web ? and comes on the heels of KANA?s acquisition of Trinicom, a provider of cloud-based web customer service and customer interaction management, announced April 2012, which expanded the company?s market reach to mid-sized businesses globally via software-as-a-service (SaaS).

?KANA is creating a new global customer service leader that is increasingly the choice for mid-sized and large enterprises alike, serving both the public and private sectors, with solutions available on-premise or in the cloud,? said KANA President and CEO Mark Duffell. ?With the acquisition of Ciboodle, we are bringing together two significant enterprise players in the customer experience management arena with strengths in depth for both the contact centre and for web customer service.?
